Hi lads I have a q6600 at 3.6 ghtz+ on custom water and 4gb ram on a asus rampage formula board with 2 3870s. I have 2 x 16 speed pci lanes currently with 3870s in x fire. They have perfomed well over last 5 years however im sure its the weak part of my rig now. Looking to upgrade them with x mas money I have read that AMD cards are less bandwidth sensitive than nvidea fermi arcitecture. So looking at 69x series or maybe 7950 becuase I can wait my xmas money will come in full around new year. My cpu perfoms as well as a AMD phenom 2 x4 975 in benchmarks. So still decent when teamed up with AMD cards I would not mind a nvidea but they really require a core i5/7 series to get best out of them without a big bottleneck which I wont have with the AMD cards also I dont care for 3D it gives me a headache so not fussed about AMd or nvidea options here.

my budget is around 300 max and it has to last me next 2 years until I upgrade to a haswell/broadwell intel build gonna skip ivy and sandybridge altogether gains are not big enough to justify extra cost. new cpu waterblock.ram.etc

Games I play BF3. starwars the old republic, arkam city, skyrim. and upcoming titles like mass effect 3 and gta 5. I have 2 displays one 32 inch samsung led 1080p tv/monitor and a 20 inch dell secondary at 1680x1050

I would prefer a single card solution as sli and x fire only work in fullscreen and I like to use my secondary for ventrillo/ teamspeak and music with out having to disable x fire /sli.

ps
I can push the cpu even higher will do 4.0 ghtz but at silly voltage and im not happy running 24/7 above 3.6/8

cheers lads

the radeon cards are pretty attractive price/performance wise
6950 unlocked to 6970 speeds are a bargain, but radeons also suffer more in BF3

will be interesting to see where the 7950 comes up price/performance wise (and if it can be unlocked as well - could even make me switch allegiance!)

I'm running a GTX580 with a 3.6ghz Q6600 and whilst I would say my mobo/cpu is now the bottleneck it's not a massive one, having said that BF3 chews through VRAM like it's going out of fashion and a 2.5gb-3gb nvidia card is out of your stated price range, so the radeons are the better choice for you imo

I got a 2.5GB 570 for £289, so if you shop around it can be in budget.

I'm still debating cancelling that though lol, but that's just me.

Yup vram bang on again. Today, just for plops and giggles I ran the monitor in GPUZ whilst playing BF3. Now do bear in mind this is the tank level in single player, but here is what I got.

Firstly it hovered right around 1200mb when I was driving up to the road block, then when I got out the tank it remained like this for the next twenty minutes.

I pulled those out of my ass too.

Yeah. Actually it was a mountain lion cub from Woodland Critter Christmas (haaaail Satan !) who did the abortion :D

so feedback is that a q6600 at 3.6+ does not bottleneck a 580 by any large degree. if that is the case im looking at a 570 2.5 gb or hold off a few days for a 7950 what are your thoughts ?

leaked post seams to have the 7970 at average 50 percent faster than a 580gtx,
so a 7950 should still be a good deal faster still than a 580.
the cost has me worried tho people saying they are going to be well over my budget hopefully its just the 7970. fingers crossed the 7950 is more senisbly priced

I bet that hurt - did the bear help? :D

I'm just here to correct you there. He's actually right, it is "bear in mind".

That is all.

Move along, nothing to see here.
