Intel sandy bridge E thoughts

Looks like OCuk have the 3930K back in stock so it`s come down a bit. Still bout 50 quid more than i paid for mine but hey ho we`re not allowed to talk about that..

Agreed with the above no question if it`s not a workstation there`s no point just get a gaming rig.

i beg to differ as the only things that are diffrent price wise are these

i7 3930K curently on OCUK for £515 but they will come back down around £470ish soon

vs

i7 2600K £254

but then motherboard prices arent that bad for x79

cheapest x79 motherboard

Gigabyte x79 £170

and if your building a good gaming rig 2bh i would spend roughly around £200 on a mobo anyway

ram ok its a bit more expensive again but you can pick up 16GB of ram for £71

G.skil 16Gb

so for the cpu your paying an extra £216 (asuming 3930k comes down to £470 which ive seen it at)

motherboard you might pay an extra 60-£70 (asuming for a z58 you go for more or less the cheapest board)

and ram you might pay an extra £30

so you are paying an extra of £316 and the benefit of that is you allready have PCI 3 to take advantage of the next gen gfx cards you have the extra two cores ok nothing needs it now but if you keep if for a 5 years then software may have caught up plus you have quad channel ram

and if your like me and you keep your gaming rig for about 5 years then this will last that long your not constantly upgrading all the time

to me its worth it when you think of it like this what do you think?

SB-E just isn't powerful enough! I'm waiting for the dual-socket octo-core chips and the SR-X motherboard for my ultra high-end build (will be building a Llano A8-3870K system for everyday browsing and downloading, will double as a file server).

For a pure gamer SB-E is a foolish choice IMO. It's a few percent at best faster than SB, and IB will be out shortly which will be faster, overclock higher, run cooler, and cost substantially less.

If you are going to go overkill on anything make it your GPU.

Yes and No, as if you are speccing out a system, as slayer said, the cost difference isn't that much and you have an upgrade path to IB-E

I don't need 6 cores all the time though Im sure I can find a use for them :p But coming from a complete new build, for a little more cash I can have the top platform that intel offer with an upgrade path and hopefully no more need to touch my machine till 2014 or 2015..

yes thats exactly what my point if your building a brand new system for extra few hundred (roughly 300) you can have intels flagship platform and for that i really do think its worth it

people just look at sandybridge E and think look at the price of the cpus thats a waste but the rest of the system doesnt really cost much more all other components cost roughly the same
