Buying an amp, Marshall MG50DFX?

On the subject of strings, I personally can't stand Ernie Balls - just don't last long enough and get rusty too soon. Would rather pay a few more quid and get a set of Elixirs, I usually get 11-49.
Didn't realise how much Marshall dislike there was around here!

I've bought a Line6 UX2, it's the older ToneMaster one, which is exactly the same except it has a red front (uglier :() and it comes with Gearbox instead of POD Farm, or whatever the current software is.

I'll likely use Guitar Rig (it definitely does work with it btw, you can use whatever software you like) as my friend uses it a lot and has a load of presets he can share with me, and will be able to give advice on how to use it :)

Very excited about using it. Realised this is a better choice. Will post my thoughts when it arrives and I've had a play :)

POD Farm is like Guitar Rig - it is a plugin that is used for recording and any interface can be used.
Gearbox is the software that links to the Line 6 Guitarports immediately with zero latency.
Both POD Farm and Guitar Rig are nowhere near my recording setup because I have Gearbox.
The proper Guitar Rig comes with it's own pedal (like the Line 6 gear) but the plugin can be used on it's own but can be hell to setup because of the delay between hitting your strings and when it comes out (latency).
I really wouldn't bother with Guitar Rig and instead buy the extra sounds for Gearbox and you will have zero latency.

Ah, you're one of those poor souls with "special" sweat. My son's like that - goes through strings like there's no tomorrow.

I honestly think that 'longer string life' is snake oil hype. I really don't notice it and it's not a gimmick I'm prepared to pay for.

Elixir strings just seem to last longer than Ernie Balls for some reason, I find. Maybe I'm special?

I changed the strings myself previously, shall I do it again? or is it quite easy to put them on, think they're ok, but for them to sound wrong?

Should I take it to a shop?

No, follow this guide -

Personally I do it a little different.
I put the string through the machine head about 70mm to 80mm and cut the string.
I then pull the string back leaving about 10mm sticking out and then turn the machine head holding the string flat on the head and letting it slowly wind around until it reaches the machine head hole (so it snakes up bottom to top).
I then stretch the strings by tuning up to concert pitch (E A D G B E) and gently pull the strings away from the neck one at a time at the 12th fret and then retune.
I keep doing this and also press the string down towards the head up by each machine head.
After a while you'll find that the strings stay in tune.

Thanks for posting, will follow that when the strings arrive :)

I tested out the UX2 briefly last night, just with the trial version of guitar rig. WOW! It sounded AWESOME. I only had about 10 minutes before I had to leave but I was blown away by how awesome it was being able to change the sound with the click of a button. I'm seriously excited about getting better now. Also started doing some scales at my girlfriend's place last night, she has a Squier Stratocaster so I was just doing it on that. I think I'll stick to doing scales for about 10-15 minutes then trying to learn and play songs for as long as I like afterwards, each night I get a chance :D

Why the hell are you using Guitar Rig when you have Gearbox which is made for it?
Yes I know that Guitar Rig is superior if you're in a high end studio and want every parameter at your disposal but Gearbox will give you 100s of great sounds immediately.

I'd already downloaded the trial version and I only had 10 mins to play.

Will definitely download Gearbox and POD Farm tonight as they appear to be free downloads from the Line 6 website.

Guitar Rig seems pretty sweet so far though. Even the free version has a load of presets. I was playing the intro to Enter Sandman with a Metallica preset and it sounded pretty good :)
