Alan Hansen uses racist language on live TV

I don't feel what he said is wrong, the context it was used in in my opinion was perfectly fine. He did not use it in a derogatory way or to demean anyone.

Also, someone here posed a question, why can we say "Black" but not "Yellow"?

Black is an accepted term used to describe those of African racial origin etc.

Yellow isn't an accepted term to describe those from the far east, indeed it has negative connotations - the yellow man etc. is pejorative.

What would you have said instead then?

I think 'non-white' is probably the best port of call.

I think if he said - "There are a lot of black and brown players..." - that would have sounded worse than coloured!

That wouldn't have sounded worse. Black and brown are factual skin colours, the term coloured is historically a racial slur against black people. I appreciate there is a slight distinction here, but it is a relevant one. If he had said there were players of all skin colours there wouldn't have been an issue at all, but that wasn't what he said even if it's what he meant.

He should apologise for his poor choice of words and re-explain what he meant. The apology should be swiftly accepted and that should be that.

Are the people complaining actually the most racist of all? By complaining aren't they acknowledging that some sort of inferiority is implied by pointing out someone's ethnicity (that isn't white)?

Do all the so called "coloured" people out there really care? If they do then that would suggest to me that they feel that they are still inferior to white people. They get wrapped up in cotton wool so much about it these days, perhaps they are inferior in some way? I'v never really noticed any "coloured" person being discriminated against in the workplace, in fact they're protected so much by the "racism" agenda that it would be nigh on impossible to do so anyway without landing yourself in court.

Get over yourself. Whingy white people annoy me as much as minorities who play the racist card for any and every little thing.

They can see you aren't white (like they probably are) but they aren't sure of your exact ethnic heritage etc. so coloured probably seems the best fit? I think you should only take offence if offence was intended. Intent and context are everything I think.

Oh i certainly don't get bent out of shape over it, it just annoys me. I hate everyone the same and expect no less from any other person :p

Re-explain what he meant? I think it's pretty obvious.

And you don't go around calling people 'brown' - yes that may in fact be the colour of their skin but it isn't an accepted term for categorising any particular race, and is likely to be seen as offensive.

Simply, there is a black race, there isn't a 'brown race'.

Calm down and read my post mate.

All I'm saying is that it's pretty much an equal playing field for all colours/races/religions now in the real world. If anything non-white people have more protection in society than white people do. Based upon this I don't understand why it's derogatory to mention or point out someone's colour in this day and age in normal conversation.

Please tell me you are kidding.

Nope - Not kidding.. didn't even use it out of context.

I can't exactly recall the exact sentence I used it in but it was something along the lines of, 'That kid is half-caste'.

It could have been left at that, but then a few kids in my class complained and got their parents involved.

It does infuriate me. I've beed called nasty things in the past, in front of teachers e.g. fatty, pepperoni face (all back when..) and nothing gets happened.

I can imagine this happening a lot in schools now - kids using the racist card to get back on certain students.

I suspect he got suspended by a white middle class leftie with a rotten apple core for brains. Heres a fact: most of us minorities don't really care about the whole racism thing and actually think its blown out or proportion, the less that is made of our 'differences' the better it is imo.

Unfortunate i guess mate, seems a lot of black people still have a massive chip. I notice this a lot with 2nd/3rd generation Afro Caribbean people. Seems their parents might've gotten a hard time and it carries down over the generations, they know if they complain now they'll get their way. Boils my blood.

It depends on how you say it. I wouldn't say that address a group of people by saying 'brown people', but I would refer to a person with brown skin as brown of it was relevant for some reason. I can't imagine anyone complaining at the lattter.
Please tell me you are kidding.
I have to agree that it sounds pretty ridiculous.
