I think he means the total for each verse added up. The final itteration of song would yield 78 gifts, the last but one would be 66, the one before that 55, etc etc

Without googling is it Casino Royal? Not a huge bond fan but I'm pretty sure Chris Cornell did the theme for that and I don't remember those words in the song.
