Does anyone not do Christmas?

Newly single, so I'd rather spend the time on other stuff.

Looking at the chaos in Asda last night while I was just buying some milk makes me glad I'm not bothering. They were all going postal and I was relatively happy :)

Not sure if it's me but Christmas seems to get more insane every year. I'm sure a lot of people would like to opt out if they could.

No and never have done, I've always seen it as a Christian celebration and seeing how I'm not a Christian, just feels odd celebrating.

What an odd thing to think.
First, as said its a combination of lots of festivals.
And who cares what it's "original" use was.
It's a good thing to get together with friends and family and just enjoy yourself and catch up.

I go tescobaiting. Basically you go into a supermarket. Find something low on stock on the shleves and hover round it. When someone goes for it you snatch it and run. Then put it back, rinse and repeat.

I think most people who don't celebrate it see it either as:

1. An unnecessary commercialised event focused on manipulating consumers into purchasing material goods in order to enrich the retail sector. This manipulation occurs through the illusion of religious significance (which in fact is not correct according to a number of Christians), as well as the fairytale figure of Santa Claus, combined with coercing the population into believing that Christmas is the one time of the year to be nice to others and when miracles occur - somehow making the rest of the year...something else.

2. An event that was never celebrated as part of their childhood, therefore holding no significance whatsoever.

I think it's odd to forgot to pay attention to it's "original meaning", but hey, that's just me.

I do like the holidays though and the catching up with friends and family :)

Nicely put.

Things change with time. Pagan, roman wine, Christmas in modern christian sense or the modern meaning which applies to most. Is its a time to spend with friends and family and have a good time, you don't even need to do the whole comercial thing either.

Random tidbit I know several Christians who will not put up a tree or other decorations as they are very much pagan rituals.

I have some non Christian friends who aren't celebrating it understandably, though they do do the present swap as it's part and parcel of British tradition, and it's part of the magic of this time of the year. I on the other hand fully intend on popping to church around Christmas. :)

I don't have any aetheist friends but I'd imagine they wouldn't celebrate it either.

Theres a girl at my girlfriends workplace who was brought up by Jehovahs Witnesses. As a result, she doesn't celebrate Christmas and so she covers my girlfriends shifts over Xmas! Score! Finally, a use for Jehovahs Witnesses!

I celebrate everything about Christmas because that's what I believe. Celebrate what you like, but taking the mick out of people for what they believe - jog on.
