Southerner here and with my family and friends its always been:

Breakfast
Elevenses (which no one other than my grandparents seemed to do)
Dinner if it was a hot mid-day meal
Lunch for a cold mid-day meal
Tea for the evening meal regardless of hot/cold
Supper for anything later.

A few people would use dinner for a hot evening meal but still use tea for cold.

This again? Why can't people just accept that some people call things by a different name? There is no right or wrong way.

Breakfast - 9am

Brunch - 11am

Dinner - 1:30pm

Tea - 5pm

Supper - 7pm

You do realise you should have 5-6 meals a day right for a healthy diet?

OP: Dinner is usually the name of the main meal of the day. Depending upon culture, dinner may be the second, third or fourth meal of the day.[1][2] Originally, though, it referred to the first meal of the day,[citation needed] eaten around noon, and is still occasionally used for a noontime meal, if it is a large or main meal.

You have been served!

You're gonna hate me then, because I don't even say the word tea (regarding the evening meal)

I have breakfast > 11's > Dinner > Afternoon Snack > Dinner

Never thought about it really

I always thought its Breakfast - Lunch - Dinner!!!

In fact, I am certain that I am correct.

No, its wrong.

Wikipedia has dinner as a meal at noon.

Tea and supper are the later meals.

Its;

Breakfast, (early morning)
Brunch or 11's, (11ish smallish meal)
Dinner, (noon)
Tea, (later on around 4ish)
Supper. (a couple of hours before bed, usually 6-7)

Thats the correct format. You have Christmas Dinner at noon, not Christmas Lunch.

I think it's quite interesting how there are so many variations. The assumption seems to be that it is mostly a regional thing but it appears it's not quite as cut and dried as that - there seems to be quite a bit of variation within regions.

When I was a lad, being brought up in Scotland, it was always breakfast, dinner, tea and supper with tea being the main family meal of the day.

Now that I'm older and living in the north east of Englandshire, you'd think I would call meals similarly, if the regional stereotyping is to be believed. Nowadays however, I have breakfast, elevenses, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and supper.

That cannot be right, I don't eat "tea" until 7, supper would be around 9-10 for me lol

Theres no right or wrong, the term used depends on each individuals culture. I always had christmas dinner in the evenings, not at lunch.

With my mum having been from Middlesbourough and my dad Newcastle, but fortunately I'm a southerner :p, I know it as tea and it always will be. Damn infiltrating northern scum :D

Wow, what an informative and unique thread.

Perhaps we could next discuss the local naming of bread products, as that's never really been discussed either.
