Firstly, Merry Christmas ;)

Need some advice..on a good comfy motorway cruiser..

Doesn't need to be the fastest car around but

Budget around £4k max

Comfortbale & Reliable, any thoughts?

The Mk.3 Mondeo is a very strong contender, but I was curious if his reliability standards would extend to something better. The difficulty with the Mondeo it has to be a manual (the auto is utterly crap), and no good cruiser is a manual.

My definition of Reliable would be something that doesn't increase the cost of ownership over 2-3 years...

Bit of a vague statement I know..

It's not really the vaguery that's the problem, it's the fact it doesn't actually mean anything. Increase the cost of ownership compared to... what? :p

I'd be sorely tempted by something like http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201150435573325/

Nice 1 owner 530i SE automatic with full BMW history, just part exchanged at BMW. Big soft tyres and wafty SE suspension, widescreen navigation, save the rest of the money for repairs to the cooling system.

It's only £245 a year. It's probably only £80 more than anything else you'll find.

Are you very young? They aren't really very expensive to insure at all.

Ah yes, may be I should have added in the original post im 22, so therefore anything "decent" is going to be a killer on the 'ole insurance

22 is more than old enough. It'll be surprisingly inexpensive to insure compared to any 'bigger' car unless you live in a really bad area.

Hmm interesting, For some reason I thought it would be a killer!
Another topic for debate is, I keep reading to stay clear from older diesels (2004/04) as they are likely to throw a chunky repair bill.. any thoughts?

There is some merit in that. If you find an older diesel with a modern diesel engine a lot of them suffer from various turbo/injections/flaps/flywheel and other random issues that were kinda new back then. I would avoid one.

How many miles will you be doing?

I do a fair bit of business miles, no company car is provided but with the current Economy beggers can't be chosers

About 20k a year max on a busy year, I'm not a crazy driver bit of a grandad on the motorway @ 80MPH.

All business miles are claimed back at 45p (1st 10k) (25p thereafter)

I'm based in Warwickshire, Nuneaton
Office is in Birmingham which can't be claimed, and I'm all over the country thereafter on business runs
