Is it worth spending money on gaming mice and keyboards?

Hey people,

I don't know what to spend my money on, an option could be a replacement mouse and keyboard.

I am currently using a Logitech Multimedia Keybard and a Notebook Microsoft Mouse. They aren't bad, but not great either.

I mainly play FPS, but I tend to spend a few hours at the desk so being comfertable is a big part of my decision.

Why should I buy a Sidewinder x6 and Razer Deathadder basically.
 
Go to the store and try them out, I'm a logitech fan personally. I believe they will make a difference as these are the things you are using to interface with your pc, you will also be using them hours at a time. Some people always ignore the basics :)
 
Couldn't imagine using a "regular" mouse for playing FPS... I know a lot of people do. For me the ergonomically designed gaming mice are more comfortable over extended play and the extras such as adjustable DPI + extra thumb buttons really make a difference.

However I don't think they are "necessary" if you are on a tight budget, £50 on a mouse would be better spent on getting a newer graphics card etc.

But I have a Deathadder + G510 and think they are great :)
 
I've just recently bought a Roccat kova+ and a razer blackwiddow and I haven't looked back since,

I was using a Logitech G15 previously and the razer is 10 times better,
 
im using a normal keyboard which has been fine and a microsoft sidewinder x8, the extra buttons are good, but the mouse is starting to beak after 6 months so i would go with a better make
 
Well standard keyboards and mouse felt fine to me, but that was of course was before I actually tried gaming variants. If you spend a few hours a day in front of the PC then the premium is worth it for comfort alone. Dare I say I even got a little better in FPS with the new mouse (Razer Deathadder) as it just feels so much better in your hand and bearing in mind that it's refusing to die compared to cheaper stuff it's probably been worth the investment in durability alone.

Keyboard probably wasn't as big of an improvement but if you are using your PC in low light a lot then backlight can be very useful and I gotten very used to the LCD on my G15 for time keeping as well temperatures during those marathon sessions during summer!
 
Yup, most diff for a gaming mouse and even more so for FPS, not so much the keyboard, (as long as it isn't a real xxxxx one) from my experience, however I wouldn't spend a ridiculous amount of money on either a keyboard or mouse.

If you want comfort, there is no doubt that the razer deathadder is the most comfortable mouse IMO along with some of logitech mice.

And of course you have to take into consideration what type of grip you use, can see what I mean by this at the end of my review for the deathadder.

Another mouse, which I think is pretty good is the logitech G700 (wireless).

I've just put up a thread asking about £100 mouses and have used a few gaming mice in the past so I'll give my opinion.

It depends what you want to do. If you're wireless, it's definitely worth the extra money to improve response times. Especially for reaction based games like FPS. You might not notice the extra time it takes for the signal to travel, but it's there and you'll find yourself making more corrections to your aim with a cheap mouse.

If you play MMOs then the extra buttons can be very worth it. Again, trying to click an enemy when there might be a lot going on can come down to accuracy and reactions which are improved by better mice.

Also finding one that's comfy. Generally mice are designed to be used for a few seconds at a time to click things. If you're gaming, getting a mouse that feels right under your hand is important as you'll be using it way more than normal mice are intended for and it can really spare your hand some pain.

There's loads of other perks too. Generally they're tougher, better DPI, more options to customise it to your preferences, better customer support etc etc.

Keyboards don't bother me as much. If I'm comfy on a keyboard, then I'm fine. I prefer laptop style keyboards with fairly flat, low travel keys. I've got a Logitech G13 now though and I'd recommend it to anyway. Amazing level of customisation. It takes a while to set up though.
 
Just bought a G510 KB with LCD display 70 quid and tbh all i can do is laugh.

Nothing on earth justifies the price of this, god knows why you would buy a g19.

the Cherry keyboard prices at 20 quid ( used to be nealry 10 mind you) has a similar feel to it, sure its not backlit and doesn't tell the time or RSS feed you crap you dont need to know but its not 70 quid.....

Mice is a different story, above posters sums it up well.

Spend more on a mouse (50 quidish...) you will notices the dpi difference

Agreed. I tried a few logitech and a steelseries gaming keyboard in a shop and it felt like I was typing on a typewriter. I had a Razer Lycosa briefly (software problems) though and that was beautiful. It really felt good for typing and gaming.

I've yet to try a mechanical keyboard to decide if I think they're worth the price though, but either way, you can get nice keyboards with 99% of the functionality of an expensive one (as long as you don't rely on loads of macros) for a hell of a lot cheaper.

Also, forgot to mention about keyboards. Personally I don't like the sidewinder x4, seems very popular here though. I prefer the sleek looking keyboards like all the ones pretty much from logitech and some of the razer keyboards. Shouldn't be much difference (if any really....) between them all when it comes to gaming response time, just pick one, which you like the look of and features wise. I like these:

Saitek eclipse 2 is VERY GOOD (I own one)! Got really great reviews, not the best looking keyboard though IMO. Would be much better if the letters of the keys were just lit, not all the gaps in between the keys.

A bit dear this next one :(, but I really like it. Maybe able to find a voucher for logitech store somewhere and get a decent amount of it. Could always try their great customer support and say your current keyboard has a few problems (make something up like some keys aren't responding and see what they do :p)

This. I saved for a G19 but didn't use the screen at all, in the end I never even bothered with the drivers upon remastering my PC.

Then I swapped to a Filco Majestouch-II Tenkeyless and it's so much better.
 
Keyboard is more personal preference, but personally I see buying a mouse similarly to buying a chair etc, if you're going to be using it frequently you may as well get something comfortable.

Edit - one thing that is huge imo, is having two side buttons on the mouse for back / forward when web browsing, cant go back.
 
The problem with the logitech screens are there's so few games it works with. The only ones I have that I ever look at it on is BFBC2 (not that I ever play it since BF3 came out) and WoW. Even then it's not really worth it, they don't tell you anything you can't see with one button press anyway.
 
It's worth getting a gaming mouse for higher sensitivity (even if you're not a gamer). Everything else is down to personal preference, but largely pointless.
 
I bought a Zboard Merc a few years ago, i played WoW mainly with it and it worked well with the custom mods. I don't use the keypad as much now.

The best part was the 10 simultaneous keystrokes as it is a must for FPS gamers, when your pressing crouch, walk, forward, straft at the same time some keyboards don't respond.


As for mouse i think they are more important and the settings like sensitivity, polling rate and acceleration off.

The first thing i do before i play an FPS game is turn the smoothing/motion blur/acceleration off, it might just be me but i cant play a game unless the crosshair is going where my mouse is.
