its really dependant on what you get for the money. but they are a money grab at full price, at sale price there normaly what id be ok to buy right away.

I dislike dlc where you have to buy something ingame aswell to get it

defense grid, and orcs must die had pretty reasonable dlc

That's a really stupid argument Neil.

Player made content is so rarely up to the standard of an actual developer made DLC, even for games that have been out several years like F3 or Oblivion there are really only a few mods that could be considered along side the DLC and even they are usually pretty limited in size.

Textures/models/fps etc maps yes, I agree generally mod communities do a better job but talking about bigger games like Fallout and TES etc? No, modders don't even come close to creating content that the devs themselves release.

It always surprises me when people pirate DLC, in some cases I can get it, stuff like Day1 DLC that they only release with pre orders or stupid little things like the Mass Effect DLC for guns and armor, but look at some of the F3/NV DLC, they are bloody amazing, adding dozens of hours of game play to already massive games. They went to the trouble of making a great game, they released a finished product, did they stop? no! They made even more great content to go along with a game which stands up perfectly by itself, they didn't just change the colours of a few items or add some pointless gimmicks, they added real engaging content. DLC like that allows Devs to make more money from a single game whilst not just screwing the fans, which I am all for.

As opposed to some hats or some scopes for increasingly similar guns.

Well said btw

DLC like Shivering Isle : Good

DLC like Horse Armor : Bad

Pretty simple really :p

So yeah I don't mind paying for DLC if its a decent amount of content, even better if its free, but I hate paying for DLC like guns in BFBC2 and skins in MK9

Bring back the days of expansion packs that came out 6+ months after the game had been released to breathe new life into it.
DLC is junk, just pure greed.

As a gamer for many years (70's onwards) i really hate the way gaming is going. These past few years have been shocking quite frankly. I am not talking just about DLC either but the amount of control the software houses have after you have purchased the game. The limited activations, copy protection that screws paying customers, the second hand market e.t.c

Digital distribution is convenient yes ...but convenient for who.

The Defense Grid DLC is just about the only recent example that I can think of which was worth the money. The game is 3 years old now so it's only fair for them to be paid if they're going to keep adding new content.

Paying 79p to unlock a new pistol or a hat it just not going to happen but then maybe things like that are important to younger players and as a result an easy source of revenue.

I agree, or in the case of Shogun total war rescently

Blood effects : Bad

Rise of the Samurai : Good

I have nothing against the concept of DLC and actually like the model.

Fact is the model is used to generate £££££ and abused by removing content from title launches and offered very shortly after for cash. Content that is already created as part of the initial development of the game and held back.

I hate the way DLC is used.

Expansion packs, good.

DLC, bad.

Expansion packs are often worth the extra money (See recently Mssing Link, Back to Karkand).
DLC is bull**** and they may as well have gone F2P with the amount of pointless **** you can often buy.

This didn't make any sense? You are using opinion to try and justify an argument but its wrong mainly because back to kark and missing link were dlc.

The only major DLC ive bought and was worth paying for (not GOTY) is Borderlands and Fallout 3.

New Maps so not worth it.(MW2/3)

Games cost far more to make now than in the past, as does additional content. If you're already profitable enough to give content away for free like Valve, great, but it doesn't work for everyone.

As for value for money, it depends on the game.

The General Knox DLC for Borderlands is worth the price and much more given the time I got out of it.

Paying £11 for four new maps for the biggest selling game of all time though? Forget it.

adding a poll, as I would like to see the consensus

poll relates to DLC in the form of addons, maps, weapons

NOT - new levels, storylines, game modes

Well yes but it is difficult to convey what I mean.

By Expansion packs I mean large additions, lots of new maps, new weapons, new story arcs etc etc.
By DLC I am meaning all the little rubbish that is totally pointless and adds nothing to the game like the Physical Warfare Pack. Why did that exist? Why wasn't it in the game or why didn't it come with Karkand?

If it comes out a few months after release then its worth it because they have usually spent some time working on it and listening to feedback, but if it comes out 1-2 months after release you know they are milking it and probably should have been included in the original.

from the content I've seen for games I have all this DLC seems the kind of stuff that used to be provided free of charge for most PC games. Seems this hit console gamers hardest but their willingness to throw more and more money at a game sometimes for content from previous games (MW maps) seems to have encouraged the DLC thing far too much. Especially when it gets to the point where the DLC is on the retail disc :/

DLC really winds me up. I like to think I have fully appreciated any game I've played through, but too often some new dlc comes about a short while later. Sadly it means the games I purchase on release are not the finished article, as well as often being buggy.
Somehow I have managed to resist skyrim by convincing myself that waiting until the GOTY edition is released will make it more enjoyable in the end.
I've always considered expansion packs to have things to do after completing the game, so there is a natural flow, complete game, if you enjoy it get expansion. DLC just goes mad and adds things all over the place. DLC packs also suffer from adding things like new weapons, which can turn a reasonably well balanced game into a brainless slugfest.

It is just profiteering, but I doubt it is going away any time soon.
Final point - there has been some good dlc don't get me wrong, but why not release it with the game or include all dlc with one edition of the game.

While I have nothing against DLC in principle, I hardly ever buy it, and if there was one thing Steam could do to improve their interface, it would be to include a 'hide DLC' button.

Nothing worse than doing a search or looking at the coming soon section and having to wade through pages of crappy Railworks DLC.

I like the type of expansion packs that are like a mini sequel (e.g. Throne of Baal) and am happy to pay a premium for that type of content.

DLC like hats or horse armour I simply wouldn't buy so it doesn't really affect me.
