Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a pair of headphones and I've narrowed it down to either the Beyerdynamic DT770 80 ohm or the Sennheiser 350's or 360's. Does anyone think either is better than the other, main usage is for gaming.

I have a Xonar DG soundcard, if that makes any difference in choosing between the headphones.

Cheers

ive got the same sound card, ive just got the 360's and i love them there just epic i dont need to say anything more about them theres now down side to them...

Well my MMX 300s certainly aren't that trebbly! They're basically DT770s but in a 32Ohm version and with a mic built in.

I wouldn't go as far to say they've got the best bass ever but they're capable of making my ears wobble if I crank them up :P

You are both talking about different DT770s.

The DT770 Pro/80 is very V-shaped and does have big bass and sharp treble. The DT770 Premium (same as MMX300) is more balanced across the frequencies.

I've not tried the PC360, but I did not find the DT770 Premium 32ohm I owned to be very good for positional audio cues compared to other cans. YMMV

I was going to buy DT770 250s to go with a Asus Xonar Essence STX. What ones would you recommend? (up to £200-£240 budget). I want good bass and they need to be comfortable for long use.

I'd recommend to you either the Denon D2000 or the Beyerdynamic DT990 Premium 600Ohm.

Both are comfortable with good bass and work well for gaming with an STX/DH. Prices are within your budget I believe.

I was tempted with the DT990s but they must be closed backs for the isolation properties. Would the closed 880 versions be of similar quality ?

The DT880 will be comfortable and good for gaming too in terms of positional audio, however it is a much more neutral sound. It will not have elevated bass and treble like the DT990.

Any other alternatives to the 990s with a closed or semi closed back? I've recently tried the denon d2000s but weren't impressed, weren't bold enough and lacked bass for my liking (it could have been the bad music choices in HMV mind).

Oh dear, well if the D2000 lacked bass for you then I'm not sure as far as other good, comfy and bassy gaming headphones go within your budget. Many find the D2000 too bassy.

Maybe the DT770 Pro 80 for ~£130?

Like I said, it could have been the music examples.

Either is a good choice but at £180 I'd say the D2000 is hard not to recommend. It's worth noting that neither are highly isolating. The DT990 is open and the D2000 might as well be semi-open in terms of isolation and leakage.

Impedance is not an indicator of sound quality.

Ordered! Will let you know how they sound with the Xonar Essence STX. Also, have you modded them at all? seems to be some nice mods online for them, very tempting . . .

Which mods are you referring to? There are the MarkL/Lawton Audio mods which are very pricey and the open-backed mod which is pretty much non-reversible, but I'm not aware of any minor/cheap ones.
