Hi,

Would anyone please be able to recommend a quiet air fan for a stock Pentium D heatsink. The original fan shipped with the machine is Cooler Master model MGT9212UR-W25 with power rating of 12v / 0.54A.

Is there some way I can determine from the model number the size of fan I need ?

Looks like an odd sized fan, 95mm.

You could perhaps buy a 92mm fan and see if it fitted the stock cooler, or you could save your self a headache and buy a LGA775 compatible cpu cooler.

thx for the reply, it seems as thought the 92mm cooler master fans will fit as both the 95mm and 92mm fans are 80mm and interchangeable

If a Cooler Master 92mm fan is OK is there any model number I should look for?

Searching the product code you gave brought up this fan description.

Magic ProTechnic MGT9212UR-W25 CPU Heatsink Fan 95x25mm Round 4-pin/4-wire plug.

The Magic ProTechnic MGT9212UR-W25 is an original replacement CPU Processor Heatsink fan for cooling High Performance, High Temperature Intel processors with LGA 775 Socket configuration.

This powerful 12V fan with an airflow of 72.45 CFM, measures 95mm x 25mm comes equipped with Tach Reporting capability, PWM Function and a 4-pin/4-wire plug connector.

This Magic ProTechnic MGT9212UR-W25 fan is round in shape in keeping with the heatsink it sits on and has a circumference of 95mm and thickness of 25mm.

The four flanges on the top and bottom side at the outer ends of the fan form four corners, configured to a perfect square each with a mounting hole to allow for easy mounting to the heatsink.

Now that I have drunk more coffee and re-read the description, I would guess that the screw fittings are compatible with a 92mm fan, it is just the housing of the fan that is 95mm.

So as you say any 92mm fan would fit.

If you want to replace like for like you would want a 4pin, 92mm fan.

From scanning through the list, there are three in the OC shop. The Xilence, Scythe and Deepcool. Happy shopping :)

minicle,

Many thx for the reply.

The link you supplied lists 8 fans, what were the criteria you used to narrow it down to the 3 that you named? Also, they are listed as case fans, I assume they are OK to sit on top of a heatsink above the CPU?

Sorry for the dumb questions but PC innards is a bit of a new world for me apart from adding memory and HDD's now and again.

The three I picked out have 4 pin connectors, the rest (so long as I didnt miss any) were 3 pin.

Fans with 4 pin connectors support PWM. Your old fan is a 4 pin PWM supported fan, so I am guessing that is what you would need. (The stock Pentium D cpu cooler is 4 pin)

PWM is a method for software, or in this case, your Motherboard bios, to control the fan speed on your CPU cooler. This link gives a reasonable explanation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_control) and control of fan speed means peace and quiet.

From the three I listed I would probably hedge my bets and buy the middle priced one. The Scythe*, and yes one should be fine sat on the cpu heat sink.

*I notice that the Xilence has gone out of stock since this morning! Your other alternative would be to see if you could track down a replacement stock lga775/pentium D cooler.
