No video out from new ATI Radeon 6850

Hey,
For christmas, I got a new ati 6850, to replace my old nVidia 9600gt. I uninstalled the nvidia drivers and replaced the card, but there's simply no video out. I've tried the other available PCI-e slot on my mobo, tried different monitors with and without a VGA>DVI adapter, different video input slot, tried reseating the ram, tried resetting the CMOS by removing the mobo battery. Still though, the computer simply shows no video. I can hear it starting up - Even the graphics card fan spins up briefly. There's no lights on it to say whether it's getting enough power or anything, but I have a 510w PSU. Halp?

Specs:
510w PSU
nForce 680i Mobo
1gb ddr3 800mhz ram

If there's anything else you need to know, just ask

What PSU exactly? It may not be suitable for the card. They can eat quite a lot of juice!

Also, is the additional power connectors on the card plugged in?

It may have been a lesser-brand PSU, I'll have to double-check, but this machine was running a 9600gt and a 7600gs for a while - Surely, if it can manage that, it could at least boot up with the new card? I can't even get to the bios with it. It's not suddenly shutting off or anything, just not coming up at all.

And, I used the 4-pin to 6-pin converter the card came with, and definitely plugged it in :p: It could be hard work trying to acquire another computer the card could fit into. Are the 6850s known for being prone to faults? If I confirm it is faulty, what's OCUK's return policy?

Thanks for the quick responses

Edit - It's been tried with 2 monitors, of what will be a dual-monitor setup. One is DVI>DVI, the other is VGA>(VGA>DVI adapter). At this stage, we've only been trying one monitor at a time

Whoa this is really bad practice! You need a dedicated 6pin connector direct from the power supply with enough amps on it, I would say at least 12Amps or so for the 6850

I had one which ran of a 400W supply although it was a good OCZ brand with 14 -17 Amps on the 6pin PCI-E connector

it did go faulty after 4 months though and i got a refund

I managed to acquire a different computer to try the card out on - Nothing. It's simply not working. Does this mean I should message OCUK and try and get them to send a different one out?

just to go over a few things have you ...
- make sure to use a 6 pin pci power connector not a converter
- make sure to run the sweeper program for nvda drivers etc (you can find them stickied under the ati drivers etc) ... I once had some issues with going from a 8800 to a 5770
- obviously try the different dvi ports and make sure the monitor is set for dvi.

I just installed a 6850 and am running it off a old 400 antec psu; so before you go changing your psu.

hmmm not sure I can think of anything else

If you're sure it's not working you'll have to return the card to OcUK who will test it before sending a replacement.

They charge a fee if you return something as faulty and it isn't.

You can request an RMA via WebNote.

Once the RMA is sorted remember to ask for your postage costs to be refunded.

djxput, I've tried your three suggestions. We made sure to use the 6-pin straight from the PSU that was tucked out of the way at first glance. No dice. Like I said, at 500W, It shouldn't be the PSU. Thank's for the advice.

Surveyor, I'm pretty much sure, having tested it on a different computer. Thanks for your directions, I'll start sorting the forms out now. Thank you very much for your help
