Hey guys, 5 months ago I bought a 1998 Mitsubishi Galant 2.5 v6 auto for £630, it came with 12months mot and 6 months tax, it was needed at incredibly short notice and has done the job just fine. Though now things are starting to be needed doing to it (exhaust headers are blowing badly, needs discs, needs ball joints on several corners, will need tax in a weeks time) and I'm not really wanting to invest any money into it.

I do roughly 15-20k miles a year as I work away contracting during the week, so in that respect the car did great, plenty of room etc, very comfy, cruise control, enough power, sounded good though quite thirsty.

I want to replace it, my budget is around £3k, can go a little higher, lower would be great.

Requirements:
*Reliable, dont want to be stuck at the road side or wasting time dropping it into a garage every 2 seconds as time off from work costs me money
*I wouldn't mind better than my current 30mpg (well 25mpg with the exhaust blowing the way it is)
*A fair sized boot would be nice, though not desperate, can always use the back seats if the boot isnt big enough for it all
*Primarily motorway miles and A roads
*look good if possible

My short list is a little varied:

Mazda 6 diesel or petrol - seem very good value for money, missing something?
mondeo 2l tdci - boring....but ticks the boxes
Honda Accord petrol or diesel

Toyota Celica - Love the look of the older later 90's models, from reviews they seem very reliable, I could live with its short comings in other areas due to the fact it will cost around a grand

Celica newer model also, not needing the newer 190bhp model, was just looking at the 140. Look good, would be more fun to drive than the mazda/mondeo options, no cruise control etc, and probably not as comfortable. This is more of a choice that I want as opposed to it being perfect for the job.

Im aware the difference in fuel cost between a 35mpg petrol car, to a 45mpg diesel car will save me around £540 a year, assuming 20k miles and the 10p price difference between petrol and diesel

Can anyone add anything to the mix? Or steer me away from any of my own suggestions?

Cheers fellas

Mike

Would it not be better to just fix what you have? doesn't sound like it would cost much at all to fix your Galant. If its doing the job just fine, and you have had it a while, and put some reliable miles on it, then surely its worth fixing?

Its worth pretty much nothing to sell, but its worth a lot to you if its reliable. spend £500 quid fixing it, and keep the other £2.5k for rainy days :)

Maybe, but I bought the car without a shred of history, which means if I'm going to keep it a cam belt change wouldn't go a miss, its on 117k so its at the milage for replacement. There are lots of small niggly things wrong with it that annoy me which is adding to the "time to get rid" feeling.....instead of pouring money into it to keep it going.

I was just thinking of scrapping it or selling as spares/repairs on ebay and getting something else worth looking after

Thanks for the advice guys keep it coming! not sure I could ever bring myself to put money down on a rover, no offence or anything! I like the idea of the octavia vrs, hadn't considered before.

Accord is excellent, the CDTI is a very good and smooth engine, imo its a lot better than anything VAG can offer.

Good ones can be had for 3k easy now, just make sure that they have been serviced on the dot! especially 04/05 models, as they have a dodgy oil pump, which generally takes the bottom end with it, normally requiring a complete bottom end, regrinding wont help in most cases :(

Mazda 6 is also a very good choice, good car to drive and fairly well kitted out, just feels a bit cheap inside. My choice is an Accord tho.

Found an 04 Octavia vrs, 67k miles, part history, climate control, cruise, traction etc, looks in good nick, 6months mot, but no tax at £2150. Seems cheap?

That does sound cheap. I'd put my one up just shy of £2k if I was to sell it (and expect about £1700 for it) and my one is a 52 plate with 101k.

Part history would be my only concern although that is a little hypocritical of me to say that as my one now has a part history as I service it myself.

Found a tidy 520 se 51 plate, with 61k miles for £2500 starting bid very local to me. Not full history, endes around 45k so its missed a service. Tempted to go look at it tomorrow, 2.2litre straight 6 I assume?

I have a celica and can tell you that for long distance driving it gets old fast. Harsh ride coupled with 3500rpm at motorway speeds is not what id call relaxing. Great car though in my opinion, but probably not the one for your needs. Reliable as a boss though.
