Hi,

Recently built a i7 2700K rig with Asrock Extreme 7 Gen 3 board and the Akasa Venom Voodoo Cooler -

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-080-AK

All built/powered up, left sitting at H/W Monitor in bios screen for 50mins and cpu temp sits at 49.5-50.5c...this is without any OC etc all stock settings.

Is this "normal"?

Not built rig for a few years so not in touch with what is the norm at stock settings.

Plan to do a bit of OC once I am happy all is as it should be.

Thanks for your advice

I believe that is normal, as overclock and power management settings are not active while you are in the BIOS. If you boot into Windows, even with BIOS power management settings turned off, you should see a significanatly cooler idle temp.

Nah that cant be right, I have the same cooler running on an i5 2500k and sitting idle I get
temps of 28-30, are you sure that is it attached properly and all the fittings are tight?

I realise I don't have the same CPU as you do but I can't imagine the temps being much different.

I always found bios temps to be low, no way should it be 50c in bios. Try reseating cooler but of coarse first boot into to windows as the others have suggested.

Try using core temp or hw moniter to get some cpu temp readings b4 worrying
Never known the bios to be wrong o.O

Right...im confused... windows says temp is 32C..bios says its 47C....

The BIOS isn't wrong.

None of the power saving features are enabled in the BIOS.

Once you've booted into Windows the CPU is idling at a lower speed and at a lower voltage than when in the BIOS, hence the lower temperatures.

Anything here look worrying...used bored settings to overclock to 4.6ghz

The CPU is idling at 1600MHz.

To test the overclock you need to run something like Prime95 to stress the processor.

You'll see the speed go up in CPU-Z and you can check your full load temperatures.

Edit

You can also disable Spread Spectrum in the BIOS if you want the Base clock to be the full 100MHz.

Well did as suggested and cpu temp went up to around 75-85c under 100% stress for 15-20mins..

Is this acceptable?

Presume CPU will not likely max out at 100% all of the time?

Is it normal/ok to idle at that speed?

Can you explain further what you mean by -

"ou can also disable Spread Spectrum in the BIOS if you want the Base clock to be the full 100MHz."

Thanks again.

Yes that is fine.

Spread Spectrum will mean you'll see 100MHz from the BCLK (base clock) and therefore a more accurate (and expected) processor clock speed. You are seeing 1596.7MHz at idle because the BCLK is 99.8MHz and not 100MHz as it should be. This isn't really a problem unless you like seeing nice round numbers.

I noticed when I stop the stress tests in Prime the temp drops back to 34-37c almost immediately... is that right? Thought it would have taken longer to cool?

Is the idle speed etc normal? Never thought about it before but always assumed cpu was running full pelt all of the time...makes sense I suppose.

Well if everything one thinks the max temp of 85c is ok then looks like im done, ready to load apps onto my system and actually start using it! :0)

Been far easier build than I was expecting...Asrock Board has been fine despite all the reviews/comments of people having issues with USB, Graphics cards etc.

Night all.
