Ok my old thread got closed and i apologise for breaking any rules.

So i am looking to upgrade from a 5850 to a GTX570, will i see a noticeable improvement with my rig as follows,
Phenom II 955 BE
4GB RAM 1333MHz
I will be upgrading to a 1080p monitor as i am currently at 1440x900. with my current setup and that res i can get a steady 60fps with BF3 on high with ultra effects and medium shadows and Motion blur off with a few dips to high 40's.

Now i know once i get my 1080p monitor my system is not going to handle that at 1080p so i was looking to upgrade to a GTX570. Its either i get a new GPU or i get an intel i5 2500k with a mobo and then try and find another 5850 somewhere to Crossfire as Overclockers don't sell them anymore.

any help would be appreciated.

Cheapest bang for buck would be a 2GB 6950, it will run better on your current system than the 570 will as it performs better with Intels setups.

The Nvidia cards don't like to be bottlenecked:

Now its ironic you posted them pictures because i am either looking at a CPU upgrade or GPU. and the i5 2500k is well on my radar. it seems the best move would be to purchase the i5 then i have a solid foundation and i know whatever GPU i get the CPU will take it, unlike the AMD.

bf3 is gpu bound so shelling out 300 pound plus to swop from phenom to i2500k will net you a big zero fps difference :D

swopping to a better graphics card will though.

a phenom as long as its clocked wont matter to much

at your new monitor res it will be about twice as quick with a

560 , 6950 , 570 (2gb cards)

they all are very very close performance wise

i went from your card to mine 6950 just for bf3 my card unlocked to 6970 and like i say about twice as quick as previous card.

no real single solution is good for ultra at moment until the new cards are out and they will cost a lot of money for basically a poor coded game.

so what you're saying is, go with the GPU upgrade? i was thinking about getting the 6950/70 but for some weird reason i have always wanted an Nvidia card and they always seem to have improvements made to games while ATI has to wait a bit longer for their performance drivers etc. would you be able to tell me how much difference it would be for me to go from a 5850 to the 570?

You do not want the normal 560ti, You want the "448" which is the same core as 570/580

That or a GTX570 will play anything the top end cards will at a few frames down but half the price ;)

You need a better system to fully utilise these cards though

Have a good read here:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18344284&highlight=2gb+vram

It's up to you if you think there's going to be a difference if any/at all @1080p

If you don't change your card very often, imo get all the vram you can get.

I was thinking the same. i want a card that will survive the next wave of games coming in the next few years, and i wanted one with a 2GB memory. am i right in saying the more memory the higher the resolution? or does the more memory allow for more in-game eyecandy to be added?

Both, but a gpu with more grunt usually wins over vram @1080p.

Both the 560/6950 are very good clockers that can reach the performance of the next card up, thus saving you a lot of cash that can be better spent elsewhere.

In your case going towards a cpu/mb upgrade which will give better results in the long run over a scant few fps here and there.

So are you saying there is no point in me even looking at a GPU upgrade? i have been wanting to upgrade to an i5 2500k for a while now but i thought my Phenom would suffice with these current gen cards. :(

I didn't say that did I :D

To get the max from a 570 you need something like a 2500K @4.2 ghz

I would not have a clue how much your phenom/motherboard setup would lag behind the sandybridge

As you have been told if the game is not cpu dependant you will be fine and the nvidia card will be offloading more physix work than the ati card did another plus

no your system is fine dont worry about it ;)

thing is in bf3 youll have as much performance as you need cpu wise as its gpu limited so people with 5 ghz plus i2500k will get same as your phenom fps wise.

just get your card any enjoy.

the most powerful game for next year will be from same people probably using same engine as its new so more gpu bound goodness :D next october just optimised .

nothing big will happen until new consoles come out now gamewise.

Far Cry 3 is out in March I think!

I currently have £350. what would you guys do to upgrade my rig to last me for lets say 1, to 2 years gaming?

hmmm

Thats a tough one. I would say your system is currently quite balanced.

Unfourtunatly both a cpu and a gpu are needed. One will bottleneck the other.

Dependant on the game, your proably better off with a gpu upgrade.

But I personally would wait, for a little bit longer, let the Ivy Bridge cpus come out, let Nvidia come out with their next gen, and in the mean time you have saved more cash.

For Battlefield 3 a GPU upgrade would increase your performance, for a game like Skyrim a 2500k would increase your performance. Problem is here nothing cheap enough will give you a big enough boost over the 5850 to warrant the price. Wait for next gen.

I may aswell just buy a console and be done with it lol. known my luck the next gen consoles would be released a week after.

I honestly don't know what games i will be playing next year, Diablo 3 is my main game if its out and i know my rig will handle that, but my current Monitor is on its way out and i have to get a new one and weird as it is the 1080p screens are cheaper than finding one of the same res i play at now so i have to take a performance slap to the face no matter what. a monitor can handle more than one resolution right? so i could play on a 1080p screen at 1600x900 without it looking crappy?
