Hi,

There is obviously a lot of knowledge on these boards and I could do with some opinions on the Mazda 3's.

I'm going for the 1.6 sport and would like to know of anything I should look out for, I've seen one with 25k miles for 8k, now looking around that seems a decent enough price without travelling 200 miles to see other cheaper examples.

Any input would be good.

Thanks

Maybe because I don't want to?

The one I'm looking at is an 09 plate and to be honest just wanted advice on what to look out for rather than options but thanks anyway.

No problem, thought you would like to know you could save yourself a lot of money.

Enjoy paying over the odds because you can't be bothered to travel a couple hundred miles :)

Right ok, re-read the opening post my good man.

I'm fully aware that I could travel several hundred miles and get a cheaper car but I asked for advice on what to look out for, not where I can find a cheaper example the other end of the Country.

Like I said, thanks for your input but it's not what I asked for.

Sounds like you have your heart set on this one you have found. And if a saving of over £1.5k doesn't appeal to you then I'm slightly surprised your fussed about any mechanical problems that may occur.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure the model you are looking at is based on the MK2 focus, which is an excellent but dull car, the Mazda looks a bit better. I'm not sure what other opinions you are looking for?

My heart isn't set on it no but the fact it is only about 15 mile away is a bonus.

The saving would be great if it was the same car but it isn't and to be honest I would prefer an 09. Thanks for pointing it out though but I'm looking more for advice on what they are like to live with.

I've heard the 1.6 petrol can be thirsty but I really like the look of the sport and they don't so that trim in a diesel :(

Thanks for the input though, I'm not after it for break neck performance, I just like the look of the sports and don't want a 'see one everywhere you go' Focus.

Why do you want the 09 plate over the 58 plate? They could literally be only days apart in terms of age depending on when they got registered....

Really need to know how many miles you do a year to justify looking at a diesel. If it's the same 1.6 engine found in the focus it'll get you around 400 miles per tank.

Mainly because one is 15 mile away and the other is a 3 hours drive away. (the gf also likes the colour of the one 15 mile away )

I'm not looking at the diesels per say, just that I considered it after I had read about the thirsty 1.6 engine, I wouldn't be doing more than 15k a year in it so it probably wouldn't warrant a diesel.

Ah right, I was slightly confused when you said you would "prefer an 09". So if a 58 plate became available 15 miles from your doorstep that would be ok?

Out of curiosity, what's your location?

Yes wouldn't be a problem for me although I suppose the newer plate is more desirable from a purely status point of view.

West Midlands, so Kings Lynn is a good 2.5/3 hour journey away :/

Travelling wasn't a problem for myself, but then again, I was set on a specific model, colour, age and price. So travelled 300+ miles to get it

I'm sure something will crop up around your area for a lot less than £8k if you wait a little

I really don't rate the 1.6 Mazda 3. It's very thirsty yet also gutless. You might as well just get the 2 litre.

That was my worry to be honest.

Would the running costs be much different between a 1.6 and a 2.0?

I've not seen anything anywhere near that while I've been looking for the last couple of months, I spoke to my local Mazda dealer a couple of days ago and he seemed to think it was a decent price and wouldn't get near it for pretty much the same car they had in stock.

Mazda 1.6 Sport - 40.9mpg combined = £2,167.45

Mazda 2.0 Sport - 34.5mpg combined = £2,569.53

Based on 15k mile per anum, £1.30 at the pump

Nice one.

Looks like I'll stick with the gutless 1.6 then, the cheaper tax and insurance is attractive as well.
