So I got some money for christmas and am looking at changing from my trusty old HTC Desire. I had an iPhone previously so want to try something new, hence me looking at WP7. So has any one here got an Omnia? What do you think of it? I've been told not to look to deeply at the hardware as WP7 is super smooth even on old SOCs, is this true? Oh and I'm a big user of google services (gmail, calendar, contacts, a bit of google+) how does the Omnia cope with these? Anything else worth noting about it? I've never used WP7 before so am a complete noob lol :o. Thanks :)

It's a great phone but the Lumia 800 is a better option if you can afford one.

All WP7 phones are extremely fast and you'd do well to tell them apart when it comes to performance. WP7 itself is very good too. :)

I was a bit hesitant when buying my lumia but after a few hours of playing around everything makes sense, it's less like a smartphone and more of a cross between a phone and a smartphone, it feels right compared to android (as much as I love android, it feels more like a PC than a phone).

It's a very well optimised operating system, no more awkward on screen camera button as all wP7 devices have to have a button for the camera shutter, it boots up in seconds.

You'll just have to try one, it does feel a bit weird but you'll come to love it.

As above really, the original batch of WP7 phones really aren't showing their age and the OS is superb. However:

I'm a big user of google services

Would Android not be a better bet due to how the integration of these services is handled directly in the OS?

I was looking at the Lumia, but it's twice the price, and doesn't look to be that different TBH, although maybe i've missed something?

My old iPhone handled gmail/calendar/contacts perfectly once setup, so I was hoping WP7 would aswell. Although the only one I really need is gmail (which I'm assuming WP7 must support?), so if contacts can be transferred from my desire some other way that would be good enough.

As for Android, i'm just bored with it TBH. As stock it doesn't work how I want it to, I CBA fiddling around with it any more, and it's not smooth at all (something I really miss from my iPhone).

WP7 will support just about everything properly, Gmail contact/calendar syncs, mail, etc.

I'm not sure if there is a Google+ app, I think there might be...

The Lumia is a nicer design, slightly better camera, proper sat nav, not much else really. If money is an issue the Omnia is probably better value.

Then yes WP7 will handle those absolutely fine.

I have an Omnia 7 and it is a joy to use.
WP7 is just so slick and stable that my Omnia only gets rebooted when an update is released !
I used the official Dev unlock and have Nokia Drive, Maps and Music on mine and they work flawlessly.

it does one better and can sync all of your emails from seperate accounts into groups so I don't have to switch accounts.

Thanks for the replies :).

Sinny, are you saying that I can have multiple e-mail accounts open simultaneously in the stock e-mail app? That sounds awesome :D.

(Sorry for the noob question :o) I had a look at how to unlock the phone and it seems pretty straight forward, however some people have said this doesn't work. If this happens can I just ring up T-mobile and get them to do it, even though I don't have a sim card with them? Thanks

Yep, that is the case. For example I have 4 email accounts synced on my phone. Three are personal accounts and all emails go to one folder on my home screen, the fourth, my work email goes to a second folder, also pinned on my start screen. Really easy to set up and really useful if you're someone like me.

I had an Omnia 7 and it was flawless for 6 monts, until I started to try and use the Bluetooth on it. It would pair with the head unit in my car and then for no reason, after a few days the Bluetooth would stop working and would never work again.

I went through 3 of them and they all had the same problem, so it's either a bad batch or inherint fault. I've since got a Lumia 800 and it's been flawless for the 3/4 weeks I've had it.

the nokia is a prettier device, but it is much nicer to touch and hold than anything else ive used.

had a quick look and the price difference isnt double, more like 5quid per month on contract :)

Had my omnia 7 16gb for 10 months now and love it, the only thing I am not sure it does is google+ i use gmail for my contacts and calendar and it woks perfectly for those.
If u are looking for a cheap wp7 hot deals uk on mobile section have a link to the jil sanders lg phone which is basically a slightly sexed up lg Optimus 7, which is 16gb, for £149.00 which is nice price IMHO.
16gb was a must have or me and I think all the uk omnias are 8gb which was too small for me, got my 16gb omnia off German bay.

I've moved from Android to WP7.5 I have found the overall experience is a lot more fluid and it just feels more complete.

However, the downside to WP7 is the lack of applications if that's your thing. I believe yesterday they released they have surpassed 50,000 applications.
