Jag xkr a 2002 4.0 litre supercharged , wow what a car , whisper quite , loaded with equipment , a real sence of presence on the road .

i have a budget of around 10k atm , and anyone with knowladge i would like to ask a few questions....

1 is it better to get a later 4.2 litre one with higher miles , or get the 4.0 litre older engine , lower miles and save some money for getting a few extras ie ss exhaust ?

2 anything to look out for that i should ask has been done to it ? recalls etc

3 i know a guy that bought a new s type jag , and he spent a fortune getting the front end rebuilt on 3 occations , i think there was a problem with the aluminium cross members or something corroding , does the xkr suffer this as well ?

Nope i was going to get a cl55 merc , but the jag just seems "right" cl55 is a lot bigger , and comes with more problems , ie abc suspention etc

If my memory serves right, the 4.0 engine (shared with the XJ) had lots of issues, particularly the tensioners and plastic water pump to name a few. These were addressed with the 4.2 and I think the gearbox was changed too, giving better economy.

I don't know about issues shared with the S-Type, but there are some good Jaaag forums out there, that would be my port of call.

edit: here's a useful thread - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=832505

I bought my XK8 on 23rd December a late 2002 car (so 4.2 and 6 speed) I had been looking for some time and seen a good few cars.

essentially the things to look for are exactley the same as any other prestige car.

Service history , Condition etc..

However in particular the pre 4.2 engine and gearbox have a few specific issues (that in many cases at this age will have been adressed and will not be a problem).

One extremely important point is they do get rust ! £10,000 is a lot to spend then find its rotten underneath and scap metal. They can leak , very common to have wet rear carpets etc look for this.

Other than that they are deemed to be quite reliable but like all prestige cars basic consumables are fairly expensive.

On the plus side for me there about the best looking car on the road and I absolutely love mine.

As above plenty of enthusiast groups and forums for Jags, join up invest the money on research before parting with your cash.

thanks m8 good info there , i had read about the rust issue , and to be fair it is putting me off the cars , its very difficult to see find the problems some times , will be worth a rac inspection before hand than copious amounts of bilm hamber rust preventer ;)

Mind if I ask what you're doing over here? Just curious....

Also, it's inane drivel :D

Ok, serious response first. Don't know about any crossmember problems with the S-Type but they did suffer problems with their autoboxes. They just didn't seem to last long. My friend got his first one replaced under the warranty after a bit of arguing, but the replacement did exactly the same thing after it had done the same number of miles.

The less serious response is HAHAHA UR ABOUT TO GET PWNED ON OCUK UNLESS YOU BUY ONE AND PROVE UR NOT LYING U SUCKER :D

I have not made my mind up about this thread yet.

Pretty pointless looking what you can get in budget a good 8-9 months in advance.

Look when (if) you get back.
