I'm off to pick up my new 40" Samsung D6530 later today and need some recommendations for blu-rays that really show off picture quality and cause general "WOWing". I'll probably be picking up a few of the most commonly suggested movies later today but will buy a lot of the rest over time.

If it's not too much of a PITA could you list your top 5?

Also, the 3D on the new TV isn't supposed to be very good but if you had to recommend a 3D movie which would it be?

Cheers folks.

Thanks for that Sparky. Avatar and Dark Knight were already on the must-buy list and I'm partial to a bit of Star Trek and LOTR, so they are definitely worth considering.

You definately need avatar without a doubt.
For th rest I'd prolly go with

Inception
Up
Star wars boxset
Lord of the rings boxset

For 3D Megamind is pretty good, along with green lantern.

Not films but I now have the Wonders of.. series, Planet Earth, Life, Yellowstone and when I get my Xmas pressies from Aunt and Uncle will have Frozen Planet too all on Blu Ray and they are stunning !!

If you are only going to have 5 then I would suggest you want to watch them time after time, in which case Avatar shouldnt even come close (as a movie it is ****** awful), the only reason people keep on mentioning it is because of the 3d

Inception
Jurassic Park
LotR Extended Editions (but totally ignore this if you only want the standard box set imo)
Alien box set
Iron Man

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I know for a fact some of my family/friends have some of those movies so I'll be asking to borrow them.

It's a pity the Frozen Planet episodes get removed from VM catch up after a week. Hopefully some kind soul will get me them for my birthday.

I thought the BBC had switched over to 1080p/1080i earlier in the year.

Edit: Looks like they definitely switched over to 1080p/1080i but there's a problem with switching between the two ... http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/bbc-hd-audio-dropouts-sony-201105201158.htm

Edit again: I've just realised you typed "VM feed only 720p" ... That's something new I've learnt today. The TV I'm getting has Freeview HD. What resolution are those HD channels in?

For a long time I've been meaning to watch 300 but never gotten around to it. How does that look on blu-ray?

I dont like the "colours" looks washed out in whichever format you watch it i reckon.

Yeah the filters they used in that film were way too strong. Made the whole thing look weird.

As well as those already mentioned, it's worth checking out

Coraline (just beautiful)
Clash of the Titans (crap film but looks great)
Terminator Salvation (same as above)
Cloudy with a chance of meatballs (very psycadelic)
Jaws (because its just awesome ;))
Toy Story 3 (awesome graphics)

People suggesting LotR as a visually stunning Bluray?
Not a great example guys, they had the opportunity to make a stunning set, and dropped the ball.

Anyway my suggestions for the visually stunningist blurays.

Blade Runner
2001: A Space Oddessy
Ben-Hur
Wall-E
Sin City
The Matrix
Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith
Avatar
Saving Private Ryan
The Prestige

Now, I'm not saying they're the greatest films ever made *I can't stand Sin City personally and Avatar was a by the numbers meh fest* but they're all up there with the the very best looking discs.

love the film - but I agree about the colours (there is another much more recent film - released in the cinema in the last month, which to me looks similar to this)

Forgotten abotu Sin City, I really love this film (especially the extended version) - dont watch it too often though so I dont overwatch it- Miss Alba looks amazing too which helps lol
