New MOBO and PC won't boot

Hi,

My PC was having issues and I suspected the MOBO might be dying of old age. I bought a new one installed a new processor (second hand) and some RAM at the same time.

Now when I try to boot the fan kicks in but nothing else happens - the fan just runs at full speed as it would during the initial boot phase.

I'm really stuck here. Have no idea how to diagnose the problem. Is there a compatibility issue with any of the hardware below?

It's been a long time since I built a PC and tbh I'm not sure I connected the hard drive correctly. MY DVD drive is connected to one SATA hard drive (which used to be my c Drive) and one IDE hard drive used as additional storage. The SATA is then connected to the new MOBO. I'n not sure this is how it was in my old system.

Apologies if these are basic questions - any help greatly appreciated. Can post specific pics if needed.

Thanks
Marcus

I reccomend clearing the cmos, and starting with 1 stick of the memory first.

P.S also remove any drives, such as DVD drives and HDs until you can get to the post screen.

Also, as that motherboard has onboard video, you could remove the gfx card for now just use the motherboards vga.

First objective is to get to the BIOS screen.

It's ok, to have those drives connected, but I reccomend having no drives installed, just to start with. And make sure you can reach the BIOS screen.

Yes, and, after you get to bios, I would add your main HD backin to see if it all boots up. :)

I've disconnected the HD, removed the Graphics card and just left one stick of RAM.

no progress. The CPU and sys fan both kick in at full speed and stay that way. no BIOS screen.

Did I make a mess of installing the CPU? It was second hand and never tested so could even be faulty. Are there any other possibilities?

Cheers

Think I might have been an idiot here. There is an ATX_12V 4pin plug and an ATX 24 pin plug on the MOBO. I only used the 24 pin as that was all that was present on my old MOBO.

the instructions that came with the new MOBO are awful. it doesnt say whether both need to be connected? Shall I plug them both in? I'm not gonna blow anything am I??

cheers

this MOBO has a 4pin connector that provides the CPU's power as well as the standard 24pin connector. I hadnt connected the 4 pin. connected that and it booted fine.
