Oh mr purple, is that why my laptop is broke?

In all fairness if he wanted a laptop there are not that many options. Overclockers don't sell a great range - not knocking them, they deal with components mainly.

Bought all my laptops from the purple people, albeit without issues, but least they are a physical presence if something does go wrong. Most online sources are probably not much better and potentially more difficult to deal with.

What was the final outcome anyway? Was memory faulty/missing?

Why couldn't he have just bought one off the Internet? There's plenty of places online that sell laptops, and I imagine the customer service is better than what you'd get at purple. Trying to fob someone off with the type of excuses that they've given the OP is absolutely pathetic.

Last Laptop i baught was from TESCO. They dont give a crap, or know a crap so just do a like for like replacement should you have any issues.

was 30 odd quid cheaper than any other similar crappy model in high street and online stores.

"Where in the world, not bloody here"

Does not suprise me with the horror stories I've heard from that place recently. Nothing quite like that though. They have suggested browsing the Internet without an AV was illegal before, shoved a screwdriver into a open computer shorting and chipping the ram, broke a few hard disks, formatted a computer when the fan CPU fan stopped working etc.

I wouldn't trust them with anything technological purely based that they are sales people not tech people therefore lie through their teeth to get a sale. If they don't know what's wrong they make it up as they go along.

Imagine a purple shirt hospital.

Meh, Id buy from them If I was after a cheap laptop quickly.

The people in my branch are pretty nice and know their stuff. Teu normally replace faulty stuff straight away.

Considering the horror stories a lot of them don't know their stuff. My local one in Newport didn't know the difference between a male and female connector.

Should have got a mac. lol

It's shocking if you assume they're employed to provide any sort of service to customers, but it makes perfect sense when you factor in what these people are actually employed to do, i.e. sell as many high-margin extras (like antivirus packages) as possible.

Most people who know anything about the subject shop elsewhere, so they can usually get away with talking any old rubbish that will sell more high-margin extras.

Did you check the shared memory setting in the bios for the on-board graphics? Might of been set stupidly high for some reason.

Haven't had any real issues with the purple shirts round here, tend to get things replaced pretty easily.

They really don't get the technical training they require though, DSG will spend days and days pushing sales techniques but the technical knowledge is just down what they know / what they learn for themselves.

Shame really as the staff won't put the effort in outside of work hours to learn due to the terrible pay.

Could you actually work in a place like that and spout lies to people about hardware and software? I know I couldn't. I remember when I was in there shopping for a laptop for my mum, and the guy tried telling me that AVG didn't work on windows 7 so I had to buy Norton from them rofl.

This, to be fair. What are you gonna do? build one? Plus the one around here gets some deals others just can't match. I suppose since i repair laptops as part of my job i'm more immune to their idiotic CS etc.. but i've never had problems dealing with em in that regard.

How thy operate as a company is beyond me.

From the looks of things they might not be operating much longer - tho the brand is too big to just dissapear overnight... but looks like they took pretty substantial losses trading 2011.

It wouldn't surprise me if they don't make it out of 2012 in their current form. They're snipping costs wherever they can while spunking money on rebrandings in an effort to catch punters not aware of the new names.

... which is exactly the same thing they've been doing for the past 3 years with zero results to speak of.

Who's dumber the people working there, or the person who buys from them or gets them to fix their computer.
A lot of people will just blindly trust them because they know nothing about computers. My parents usually get me to sort out their technical problems, even though I know next to nothing about computers, but not everyone has someone trustworthy to turn to.

Where would you send your computer to be repaired (assuming it's out of warranty and/or you can't send it back to the seller to be repaired for whatever reason)?
