Hi guys,

stil conflicted about which to get for a build that i expect to last for about 5 years.

the 3930 has quad channel ram, and not too bothered about the price difference, but which would be the wise option?

i probably wont swap out the processor again (after 5 years ill need a new set of inerds completely) so is the 3930 worth it for longevity (when the C2 stepping is out)?

PC will be used for heavy gaming and the usual type of applications, video encoding, i do tend to batch up so currently run 4 threads at once, which is getting quite slow on current rig.

For gaming you wouldn't see much difference. Video encoding will benefit from the extra cores, so if you do much encoding the 3930K will serve you well. Both can be upgraded next year (2700K can be upgraded to 3770K after April 8, and the 3930K will have an upgrade path with Ivy Bridge-E at the end of the year.

I also went with the 2700k my reasoning was to do with price however and the fact I really don't need the extra cores.

It depends on how many bits you are re-using as well.
Based on a 5yr timeframe and that you have stated cost is not an issue, then it has to be the 3930K SB-E set up..
The extra cores will help with the video encoding, and you will have an upgrade path to 8 cores next year with Ivy-E. In addition, with RAM so cheap, you can give yourself 32Gb of 1600Mhz RAM for under 200 quid

I faced the same choice as you and went for SB-E as I felt that the return over 5yrs was better, all I need is for the C2 stepping to come out and I can start building..
If you are thinking 2yr timeframe than Id go with a SB z68 build, but for 5yrs, splash out on that little bit more as it has to last you..

Yeah I want it to be PCIe 3.0 as well so that my bext graphics card purchase 7 or 8 series will benefit, the current asus gen3 mobos don't sound very good to me, and as I am too impatient I can't wait til April!
I've made up my mind to get the SB-E, just hope OCUK start selling the C2 on the 20th or I'm gna get twitchy! Lol

Cheers
