I suppose they do all align at some point, since the length of the years on each planet is different. But so what? None of the other planets has any effect on Earth, so it doesn't matter in the slightest where they are unless you're flying a spaceship to them. The biggest effect would be a tiny, tiny partial eclipse of the sun from Venus passing between us and the sun. Which, of course, happens regularly and has no effect at all apart from being interesting and making cool photos.

Now I'm curious as to whether or not all the planets do ever align. Not that it matters in any way other than satisfying my curiousity.

Well, that's a bit surprising. I'd realised that you never get a perfect lineup because the orbits aren't all exactly on the same plane, but it appears that even a precise line when viewed from above the ecliptic won't happen within the life of the solar system. Plenty of times when most of the planets are pretty close to being in a line (ignoring positioning "above" or "below" the ecliptic), but not all of them in a line. But it wouldn't have any effect anyway.

It's worse than that, because none of the Mayan calendars (they had several) end on the next winter solstice. It's all baloney.

The Mayan calendar ends because it had to end somewhere...

It's just like the "Millennium Bug". Load of fuss about nothing!

Over time I've noticed more and more people becoming aware that the earth is going through major, almost prophetic, changes. On Dec 21st 2012 the Mayan calendar ends and may are predicting the end of the world. Some are saying there will be a new age of enlightenment.

So what do you think will be 12 months today?
