Hello All,

First of all, Happy New Year!

Now, as a treat for myself I purchased an HD 6770 with a nice 2.5% discount and free shipping for the new year so that I wouldn't have any troubles running new releases of 2012 on at least medium settings. While it may not of been the best value for money choice, whats done is done.

Now the issues. After uninstalling my old Nvidia 9500GT drivers from the add/remove programs menu in Windows 7 I rebooted my PC into safe mode and ran the Driver Sweeper program, check all Nvidia related boxes then analysed and cleaned all remaining Nvidia files and folders. This was followed by shutting my PC and installing the new graphics card.

I've now installed the latest AMD Catalyst Control Center and the most recent display drivers for the 6700 series card but I am now experience random BSODs. Now given that I wasn't experiencing these prior to installed my new card I obviously assume that it is the cause and I now find myself looking for any possible solutions or work-arounds.

All answers appreciated as it is becoming a little frustrating now having to put up with Mass Effect's poor auto save feature!

ME3 is this year!!! Happy New Year!! Anywho... Reseat your GPU. Have you attached all cables etc? Can you write down the BSOD error codes? take picture etc they can give you direction as to the problem.

Try reseating ram- just as a possibility.

I'll shut down my PC, reseat, ensure the 6-pin is definitely in place although it may not happen until tomorrow as I'm knackered!
And if BSOD does happen to occur again I'll try and get a photo although sometimes it dumps the RAM and then restarts.

Thanks for the speedy reply!

Right, Morning!

I've just finished re-seating the graphics card, I unplugged and reconnected the 6-pin and it is firmly in place. Re-seating the RAM would preferable to avoid as they are in place under my Arctic Cooler Pro Rev 2 which is a absolute pain to re-install.

Although I am sure the problem lies somewhere with the graphics card as before the BSOD appears the screen goes black with something that looks like static on an old TV in blocks going across the screen. Then the BSOD appears with no differences to normal.

Also if it's any help I remember that all my previous BSODs have the code "1E" in the stop error. I don't know if this helps at all but as mentioned before, I'll try and get a photo if it happens again.

First BSOD of the day has just occurred, however I was unable to get a photo as after the memory dump was complete my computer restarted itself.

But upon returning to my desktop the dialogue box informing that there had been a critical error did contain the same stop code as displayed by the BSOD:

BCCode: 1e
BCP1: 0000000000000000
BCP2: 0000000000000000
BCP3: 0000000000000000
BCP4: 0000000000000000
OS Version: 6_1_7601
Service Pack: 1_0
Product: 768_1

Hope this helps!

You really shouldn't be using the drivers off the disc, if you need to try different drivers get slightly older ones off the AMD website.

What PSU do you have? Any CPU overclock?

To stop the system auto restarting go to Computer > Right Click then Properties > Advanced System Settings > Startup and Recovery > Settings > Untick Automatically Restart > Press OK.

Right, I've installed the drivers off the disk which are obviously a little out dated but functional, I'll also check the AMD website for previous version and try those at some point as suggested.

Edit: I stand corrected, according to the Catalyst Control Center my drivers are up to date, the interface just looks different from the version from AMD's website.

@Speed

I do not have any overclocks on my system, everything is set at stock speeds.
I am using an OCZ StealthXStream 2 600W PSU which I have had for about 4 months.
I have also set it so that it doesn't restart instantly after a BSOD, thanks for the instructions!

Any chance you can install Windows on another drive and test the card on that install? Sometimes Driver Sweeper can accidently remove something it shouldn't have and muck up the install.

Very true, these days driver uninstallers are pretty good and Driver cleaner can cause more problems than it solves. Doing a clean install on another hard drive is a great way to help rule out the such driver/software issues. If it doesn't help just go back to your original drive.

Unfortunately there are no other PCs / HDDs I can try my card with. I want to avoid re-installing my OS as I have over 150GB of Steam Games and due to where I live I only get 0.5 Mb/s download speeds.

I have just encountered another BSOD after an hour and a half of play ME1, I managed to get a photo this time:

Anyone make any sense of this?

It seems a fairly generic stop code, are you monitoring temps while gaming? Something like HWMonitor running in the background, stop after say 30 minutes and screenshot the max temps.

Usually GPU caused BSOD are Driver, Power, Temp or Hardware related in that order.

I have GPU-Z that has a section for monitoring temperatures, will this be accurate or shall I download the HWMonitor as suggested?

Also, from what you were saying about causes, does my inability to test the card in another machine mean that the issues may stay lie with the drivers?

GPU-Z is fine, I use HWMonitor as it lists min and max temps, personal preference more than anything.

Not as such, I mean you had an nVidia card previously which would usually suggest that the issue might be driver related if it was say three years ago. But you've used driver sweeper and modern driver uninstallers are pretty good. I'd say if you don't make any other progress then sourcing or borrowing a cheap hard drive to do a fresh install on would be a good idea. Basically if it doesn't solve your problem then you can just go back to your old install with ease.

I'd suggest running Memtest86+ just to rule out the memory. It is unlikely to be the cause but at least then you can rule out the memory. It might take an hour or so, I usually do it when I'm out or doing something else. If you have a spare USB Drive you can use their USB creator: http://www.memtest.org/#downiso (the one that says *NEW* next to it). If you don't and have to burn a CD/DVD then I'd advise getting UBCD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) which has a lot of other useful stuff on it (including Memtest86+), so it saves wasting a CD/DVD on just one utility.

Just opened up ME1 and it crashed again but this time it crashed while I was loading my game, meaning that this isn't graphical stress on the card causing the issues (not that ME1 is an exactly GFX stressing game).

Also, given that this card is the Asus DirectCU version of the 6770 makes me think that heat isn't to blame either. I have just run Kmark (Part of MSI Kombuster) and after running the entire benchmark the GPU temperature didn't climb above 50 degrees C.

Does this bring the issues back to either being a driver issues or a fault with the card?

Edit: Just read your new post (@Speed)

The closest I have to a cheap old hard drive would be an old 2.5" portable hard drive that I may be able to scavenge from my parents, if I can get it out of the enclosure would I be able to install Windows 7 using my OEM disk that I used to install the OS on my current system?

Well you can rule out Temps then.

Might be a faulty power supply or a driver/software issue, but rule out the memory first.

Is there anything else I can do to rule out other components? As previously mentioned, the download speeds around where I live are appalling so UBCD will take around an hour to download. Might as well do what I can to solve the issue while waiting.
