Sounds good to me the worst thing about the ipods I had was the HDD breaking after being in my pocket. Thats why my only remaining apple product is a 1st gen Shuffle. Yeah so its only 512Mb but its been through the wash 4 times and still works perfectly.

Abused drive with moving parts, in failure shocker.

Not really. At the time, the 1.8 drive was the only solution available for reasonable money, if you wanted loads of storage.Yeah but its a stupid idea putting a poor mechanical drive in a "portable" device. It WILL be in pockets/bags etc. People WILL take it running/cycling etc so to use rubbish mechanical drives is just dumb.

I think the idea of them being portable goes out the window with that lot. I'll stick to my iPhone and earphones. I'm sure it's good enough as it is.

The iPod was never marketed for use running etc, (as the shuffle or nano later were), so to call it dumb, just highlights your misuse / expectation that it should do what you want of it, rather than what it's built for.
On the move, is different to running. Which has repeated impact.
Sitting down in a chair is an impact that broke my classic (although could have been the straw that broke the camel's back). Why aren't more things more rugged?
If things are too rugged, the producing company goes out of business because it doesn't sell replacements, since they aren't required. Apple is a money making demon.
