Why is it that items can't be sold on for a profit?

E.g. with hdd prices having raised recently, their 'genuine' value on an open market might be similar or higher than when first bought. But selling at such a price on MM is not allowed.

I also saw a gfx card queried for (possibly) being sold for more than it was bought (2nd hand) 6 months ago.

Why is this? Just to stop traders?

The idea is for members to help eachother out, not turn a profit.

:)

2.7 - Traders:

The Members Market are for the use of private individuals to buy and sell their own personal property. Commercial Trading, i.e. buying and selling of items specifically for profit, is strictly prohibited. Anyone buying and / or selling excessive quantities of items will be deemed to be Trading and they will be banned from all Overclockers UK Forums.

Under no circumstances are Traders / Firms / Companies allowed to conduct their business on the Overclockers UK Forums. Failure to comply with this rule will result in an immediate ban from the Overclockers UK Forums.

The practice of Bulk Purchasing & Reselling through the For Sale forum is unacceptable. Such threads will be removed on sight and without further explanation. Bulk buying is not tolerated on this site and as such is deemed as trading. However, if you have a genuine reason for wanting to sell a surplus of kit then you should contact one of the members part of the moderating team via e-mail stating your reasons.

I think the profit part is ridiculous, it shouldn't be up to the forum to decide if some one is allowed to make a profit on an item they sell, and doing so doesn't instantly equate to them being commercial traders.

The rule for commercial traders is completely fair and reasonable of course, but to dictate that you're only allowed to break even or make a loss is stupid because it opens the possibility of all sorts of ridiculous situations where you've been given an item as a gift but you don't want it so are selling it on (which is gaining a profit) for an item you've bought well under market value, but no longer want/need so are selling it on and many other reasons.

It's up to the forum owner what he does or does not want done on his forum, the seller is completely free to sell his stuff somewhere else for a profit.

That's true, but it's also fair for me to make a comment on those rules.
