My motherboard power supply is a 8 pin... am I supposed to connect two of the 4 pin connectors to my board or a single 4 pin? I have been running off a 4 pin for months now... but I have stability issues I am trying to address and wondering if this could be the cause?
 
I don't think it is strictly necessary to connect both. However, if your PSU has an 8 pin (2x 4 pins in your case), then you may as well connect them. As you are troubleshooting, I think it is probably a good idea.
 
Of course your supposed to connect the full 8 pins. A lot of PSU's dont even split and just provide an 8 pin and or a 4pin.

It is possible to work off the 4 pin, but you would always connect 8 if the option is there.

It may well be the cause of stability issues, especially if you have an overclock on the CPU.
 
Well... my issues arise when I enable SLI... I have two 560Ti's

1 X MSI
1 X OcUK

When I put MSI in PCI 1 and OcUK in PCI 3 (both x16) both cards are detected and I can enable SLI.. but I have stability issues with an overclock or without

When I switch the cards around the MSI is not detected at all

When I remove either of the second card my stability issues go away

I have swapped RAM, underclocked, etc etc

I reckon either my PSU is underpowered (650W) or my mobo needs both of these 4 pins connected

So... going back to the original question.. I just connect 2 X 4pin correct? nothing is going to blow up?

Connecting both to make 8 pins will do no harm but I'm not sure how it'll help with your problem.

The 4/8 pin power connector is for the CPU and as far as I know it doesn't power anything else.

No harm in trying though.

Which 650W PSU are you using?
 
What is your psu, brand and wattage. If your motherboard has an 8 pin cpu connector, then use it. An sli system can be pretty power dependent. Could you tell us the spec of your entire system.
