Getting the good old BSOD

Before Christmas, I bought a XFX Radeon HD 6770 graphics card because my old 5450 would not enable me to run SW:TOR very well, after a few days one of the cables on my rear fan somehow got fried, and my Win Power 650W PSU died, so I bought a Cooler Master 550W and a akasa motherboard controlled fan.

Now, after playing for about 45 minutes to an hour my screen would freeze, and then reset and I would get a BSOD, with the error about "Attempting to reset display drivers timed out" or something like that.

I updated my graphics card, and my BIOS, and I would still get the BSOD.

I decided to take the graphics card out and out my old one in, no errors.

I have a i3 540 processor, a ASRock P55/USB3 motherboard.

Any ideas?

Hello and welcome to the forums :)

If your cheap PSU failed then it may taken out the GPU, as you mention your old GPU seems to work ok.

Hard to say, a internal component got damaged which starts to get overheated over time, GPU memory may be damaged which as gaming progresses the faulty part get filled.

You probably would need to return to place of purchase, do you have the option to test the card in another system.

No, it's just my desktop that I can use.

I'll try my old GPU for a few hours tomorrow, to try and rule out any damage to the motherboard.

When I took the 6770 out, it was very warm, I don't know if that was down to overheating or not.

Update.

After using my 5450 for 3 hours now, I have recieved now Blue Screen of Death.

So it looks like the 6770 is broken, guess I need to trade it in or something.

If both cards give you the BSOD then surely it suggests something else is causing the problem? Motherboard perhaps?

EDIT: Or did you mean to type 'received no Blue Screen of Death' in which case it definitely sounds like your graphics card!

Ooops, my error.

Yeah, since I've been using my 5450, I have recieved no Blue Screen of Death.

So something wrong in the 6770 I guess.

the 6770 draws more power than the 5450 I would imagine? this could be a PSU problem... also, is your motherboard BIOS up to date?

It does seem that way, I would def say its when the psu went.
Might be use organise RMA with the supplier and see if they can test the card and double confirm, he fully no other parts were damaged.

Yep, filled out the return form, they'll get back to me within 24-48 hours hopefully with the RMA so I can send it back to them so they can test it.

Another Update:

I returned the 6770 to the company, and this morning I got an email from them saying that the item has been tested and found to have no fault.

* Used graphics benchmark software, No Fault Found

That was their reason.

So I guess I'll have to arrange to get the item back.

Well, if your PSU died then it could have damaged anything, but the fact that it worked fine without your 6770 seems surprising if there really isn't anything wrong with it!

If it's working fine, I see no reason to upgrade the motherboard just yet. Maybe try the 6770 again when you get it back if they think it works?

Maybe try uninstalling the graphics drivers, and doing a fresh install of them when you get the card back?

Yeah I'll try 6770 when I get it back.

Just seems weird that they couldn't find a fault with the card, but it doesn't work that well on my machine.

Yeah it is odd. I think you've just got to wait for the card back now to see really. At least it seems to be working out with the old one?

Just on a side note, never buy a cheap PSU! The cooler master one you replaced it with should be much better.

Another update:

Got my 6770 back, unistalled the 5450 drivers, installed the 6770 driver, and my good friend the BSOD has come back.

I also have a picture of the BSOD as well:

I'm starting to get annoyed now
