I've had mobile broadband with 3 for a couple of years now as I take it with me and use on the laptop, never really had any major problems so long as they leave me alone (they always constantly phoning with marketing and junk).

Anyway, I renewed them again in May 2011 - x2 15GB per month dongles. The one and only thing I was adamant about was that they capped both of them, which basically meant if the 15GB allowance on either one of them ran out I couldn't use it anymore.

The cap has been working on both of them as expected. The reason for the cap is they charge 10p for extra Mb you download over your allowance, something I am not interested in doing.

I've just recently been setting up a new website which I obviously needed to FTP files to and from. I checked the My3 broadband usage and it says I have gone over by £239.81

First of all they are (were) both capped, someone at there end must have changed this. And secondly, it's a new year/new month, allowance would have reset anyway.

Either way I am pulling the plug, Direct Debits getting canceled on Tuesday they can go whistle for it. I told them I am not going to pay, someone has removed the cap without my permission or knowledge and I will seek legal advice if I have to.

It doesn't matter if its £9, £90 or £900 squid Three are slimy leeches

Rant over. :o

What happens when they update your credit record with non-payment notices and apply for a CCJ?

I'm not saying don't fight them, but ultimately they have more power than you so be clever about it.

Get details of the complaints procedure and raise a complaint via the proper channels, cancelling the direct debit is the worst thing you can do.

..True, I will tell them I will pay the same bill I have been paying since day one which is £15.74 for each dongle. These charges should not exist.

If I don't cancel the Direct Debit they will take the money out and to me that means they win. At the same time I agree with the credit rating side of things etc.

I am hoping this is just a millennium bug, even if it is 2012.

Wow, just read somewhere on another site (might of been which.com), and someone used there mobile broadband dongle abroad, when they came back they had a bill of £27000!!

I was considering getting a three monthly dongle for my nephews (no phone at their house) for surfing/youtube,but after reading this about the caps business i am going to re think.Keep us posted with your results please

I had some trouble when I started a new phone contract. I left the shop with my new phone but with my old sim card in it becuase I had to wait 30 days for my old contract to be cancelled. My phone was setup as default and I ended up with about £80 in data charges beucase it was auto updating and stuff from my old sim and the lady in the shop had not applyed the data addon I needed for free. I actually phoned the lady that had sorted out my contract and she talked to her manager and I was given the £80 credit on the bill and a £20 good will discount becuase of the mixup. I was polite though out the call and never got upset and even when out of the way to speak to the manager of the shop to say how impressed I was with the service I had recieved. I would suggest just phoning them up and tell them what has happened I am sure like you said it was just a mix up.

3 are ok as far as a network go, but their customer service is terrible, took me 4 phone calls to get the adult content filter taken off my account (not just to look at porn) because it blocks stupid things like tshirthell and other random sites, I'm 24 FFS!

Each time I called them they ask what handset I had (like it mattered) then I spend 10 minutes explaining to the iPhone Support Team what I want to do, finally after the 4th call I had the content filter removed, only for it to return a few days later!

I think it's gone now, or at least it's been relaxed, but it still pops up on those beastiality sites that I frequent lol

I got a 3 mobile 1 month sim only contract (£25/month) which had 'all you can eat data'. Tethering is allowed and I must have regularly used between 20-100gb per month with no issues.

I don't think you are allowed to use them in dongles so have to have a 3g capable phone to tether to your computer but for me, it was the only affordable way of using the amount of data I did. The unlimited texts and 3k minutes were also great. It may be worth looking into if you regularly require over 15gb.

3 have a usage tracking app, if you knew you were hammering the connection then surely you should have been closely monitoring your usage regardless.

I've never heard of any operator capping a service from a user request.

I do empathise with you, but you're paying the bill or getting a CCJ on this one. They'll deny your phone call, and just state everything you did was in their T&Cs.

If you have the 3 app, you can turn off the filter in seconds.

Also, beastiality, what are you 16?

When I renewed it they capped it for me, that was the only way I would renew - this HAS been capped ever since. As soon as the 15GB was used on either dongle, a 3 web page would show up telling me I could no longer use the Internet without buying an add on, or waiting for the new month.

I checked the last 6 months of my bank statements, and both dongles were all £15.74, not a single byte of data over my limit - because I simply couldn't go over even if I tried to, hence there WAS a cap.

How do you turn it off? I can't see how

And no I'm not 16, I'm 24, it blocks almost all porn as well as random sites like Tshirthell

OK, an updater. Just been on the phone with 3, person on the phone was actually understanding.

I explained that when I upgraded the 2 dongles, the one thing I wanted was them both capping. He even acknowledged the fact that I did indeed have caps on both dongles, as I previously said. Basically once the allowance ran out I could no longer use the Internet without buying an add-on or waiting for the new month.

This is where it gets sneaky. Apparently the cap can fail if there is maintenance to there networks, and he also said that for a 2 day period towards new year they take off everyones caps (limits, not hats)!.

The charges are also not £92.71, but apparently they are £239.81 excluding the £15.74.

An investigation team is going to get back to me soon, but even the customer support bloke emphasises and agrees with me. He can clearly see both accounts had caps on since day one, and so this should not even of been allowed to happen.

Have been in contact with 3, they have admitted a mistake on there behalf and said they will be crediting my account to the amount mentioned before.

Will wait and see if that happens though :)
