New MBP - should be this slow?

Hey guys,

I got a new 15" base MBP after the refresh the other month. First thing I did was transfer my time machine backup from my old Macbook onto it.

But I was thinking as I was scrolling down a few pages on firefox, should it be this stuttery and laggy? There's no smooth scrolling like I suppose, there should be? iTunes is the same, it's like running a game with 20 fps or something.

I have got a lot of tabs open but i7 and 4gb of ram surely should be able to deal with it?! Tho I think it's the same regardless of what i'm running.

Cheers!

Edit,

Oh i'm on Lion, of course.

Check the Memory section of activity monitor for free memory and the amount of page outs.

In my experience with a bunch of stuff running Lion runs out of RAM on 4GB and starts paging out to virtual memory where my old C2D MacBook running 10.6 didn't. A £30 upgrade to 8GB sorted it out.

Ah I had 75mb free.. But I quit Firefox and that gave me something like 2gb free (why on earth does it use that much up anyway?!) and I went back to iTunes and it still feels like 10 fps...

I'll take a video and see if that shows the effect - oh and iTunes is text list only - no album art.

Could be a graphics card issue. Check your temps?

Your mac should never be this slow for just browsing etc.

It sounds like the classic Firefox plugin container going into overdrive and using up all of your memory. Try another browser and see what happens

I have noticed some of the OS X animations can intermittently get a bit less fluid on 10.7.2 when it's been running for a while. It's the same on the Intel and AMD graphics. A log out and back in usually cures in. My hunch is it's a badly behaved application that does funny things with spaces/mission control.

Don't use Firefox myself much other than for sites that won't work properly in Safari.

That's why I stopped using Firefox on the Mac, it went from being nice and smooth to horribly herky jerky and nothing I could do would make it nice again.

I don't remember if it was a slow degradation or whether it just suddenly went jerky but one day I just noticed it.

Same here, it's such a pain in the arse, did you try another browser to see if the same issue occurs?

I use Safari, have done since my first ever ibook and never had any problems.. Never liked firefox.

As suggested, give safari a try and see if you still get the problems. My MBP runs like a dream all the time (even on the original 4gb ram)

Cheers for the replies all. I did a Geekbench run: http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/chart/show/538753 - looks pretty normal?

As for Firefox, I closed it down, opened up Safari with 1 tab and the effect was still the same... infact, I downloaded Xbench - closed everything down apart from the program itself and opened up the .rtf file. It's 25kb and the laggy scrolling was still evident.

I ran 'Verify Disk' too, seems fine but verify disk permissions and I get a lot of errors...

Edit,

Here's a poor video of what i'm experiencing - with only text edit open:

Watch in 720p, it doesn't show it particularly well but when I scroll to the bottom of the file it's quite noticeable.
