Hi guys,

We've always had incredibly slow broadband up to the point were youtube vids at 360p have to stop and buffer.

i've done many speed tests, this is the result of the most recent one

once or twice i've had like 1.1 or 1.2 Mbps.

I've also taken a picture of my router stats

internet.png

does the downstream mean i should be getting around 8 Mbps??

If anyone could help me out in figure out why my connection is so poor it would be really appreciated.

Cheers

Do you connect wireless or wired to the Router? USB or Ethernet?

The line stats are good you should easily achieve the 8mbit down speed.

I would try and reinstall the network card drivers or disable and re-enable it for starters to eliminate that causing a problem.

I use wireless on my computer but have run a speed test with it connected with an ethernet cable. All my drivers are up to date as well. The connection is the same for everyone in the house on our laptops. I think it might have possibly something to do with our ISP??

Thanks for the fast response :)

Actually, with a 12dB margin I'd be expecting AT LEAST 10Mb. Not to mention you could probably get 2-2.5Mb upstream

Give your ISP a call. Those stats indicate its a throttling problem, so if you'd had it a while id be looking to go elsewhere!

I'd go for an ISP that offers an LLU package.

You seem to be connecting to TalkTalk via a BT ADSLMax product as your speed is 8128kbps/448kbps, basically older ADSL. TalkTalk/Sky etc will in some cases resell BT Wholesale's rubbish Max product as their own when the end user is not on a unbundled exchange, or if they have insufficient capacity. TalkTalk will oversubscribe the bandwidth they get from BT to recuce costs, so at busier times you'll get a crappy speed.

So the answer? Change to a proper LLU ISP or pay more for your broadband. To determine what LLU you can have have a look at Samknows and put in your exchange to find out.

Given your current connection speed and margin I'd say that you should get pretty good speed on ADSL2+.

Just had a word with my mum, she deals with the phone and broadband bills etc and we're with AOL which changed to talk talk last year sometime and our phone calls are with BT. So im guessing it would be best for use to move our to BT and get everything with them? I'm pretty sure this will cost a bit more but at least we'll be getting what we pay for.

I just check Samknows and it's saying we can get BT Wholesale ADSL Max.

I think a change is in order

Cheers for the help guys

I had a look on Samknows and under the LLU it has for TalkTalk RFS date set : 21/11/2011. I do remember in about August last year we got a letter from them saying they would be doing work at our exchange to improve the speed in the coming months, so maybe a call to them in the morning to ask why our connection is so poor will help clear things up? If they can sort it looks like we'll just move to BT as TalkTalk are the only providers of LLU at our exchange.

What is the exchange you are on? And more important what other services are coming available on the exchange.

If you let us know your exchange code from SamKnows we can see what else is available because as one other member pointed out you are on an OLD ADSLmax service which should now really be a ADSL2+ service

Cheers

Just another quick question idrinkStella, do you turn off your Modem on a night?? If so this could explain a possible reason for the problem.

The best thing to do is just leave the Router turned on. in the 9 years that I have had broadband the only time I turned the modems and routers off was to go on holiday OR to move them to decorate.

Here's a link to Samknows http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/ESCRF i think everything you're looking for is there, if not the town i live in is crieff.

As for the router it's always on.

Thanks for helping out.

Ditto about the router being turned off.
You need to find out what your ip profile is before messing with drivers and stuff.
Chuck in your landline number in here: http://speedtester.bt.com/ after you click on the Adsl/Fibre button and run the test. This will give you your ip profile and is the real world limit of what you will download at.
Looky here for more info :http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/IPprofile.htm

No matter what the result above is, leave your router on for the next couple of days and check again.

edit... just seen you do leave the router on... hmm. Still check the ip profile though!

Cheers Fluke, I checked of the speed tester and got these results, so i'm guessing my connection is really slow and a call is needed to talktalk to ask them what the problem is?

IP Profile looks fine. TalkTalk are just throttling your speed.

Ironically, the only LLU operator planned for your exchange is TalkTalk, so it might be worth checking or asking if they could move you over to an LLU package before giving them the finger.

Failing that, move to a decent BTIPsteam ISP like ADSL24. Stay away from BT Broadband*

*You can pay line rental to BT and have broadband with any ISP, but sometimes it's cheaper to have both with the ISP (like Sky etc). You'd have to kill me before I'd go near BT.. effectively, you'd be going from 1 bad ISP to another with the same service. A DECENT ISP (like ADSL24) will be better for you because they won't throttle and can clear issues v.quickly with a simple call.

We're going to see how the phone call goes tomorrow with talktalk and will prob ask for our mac address so we have the option to change. I was looking at ADSL24 and would the complete 50 package be enough with 50gb? i'm occasionally on xbox live and so is my mums partner, i watch a fair few vids on youtube and do a fair amount of gaming online on my pc and download games from steam/origin.

Cheers for all the help guys

those are really good line stats, you really ought to be getting 8mbit down. try different speed test servers and try an ubuntu torrent and see if that can go faster.

If his router is syncing at 8 meg then the speeds he's getting are either down to a very poor wireless connection or he's being throttled by talk talk.

i think we're definitely being throttled, i've tried different speed test and they're all about the same, even the one on the talk talk site is below 1Mbit and it says that is below what it should be.

Hopefully a phone call to them tomorrow will get it sorted.

Looking at your exchange status on SamKnows, its RFS dates for the 21CN upgrade is 31/03/12 and the LLU should now be complete so hopefully TalkTalk can remove the throttling that is on the DSLAM for your line.

You may even be able to get faster than the 8Mbps after the 21CN upgrade as ADSL2+ circuits should be installed with that hardware upgrade in the exchange.

Could someone kindly explain what it actually means when SamKnows says that (as in my case) under the 21CN WBC status: RFS date set : 31/05/2012

Currently I am with BT, and we are fed virtually straight out of a cabinet which in turn is fed (from Leominster exchange) by about 3 miles of fairly small section underground cable. If I am lucky my download speed can even be as high as 1 Mb/sec.... wow! :(

Am I likely to notice any improvement after 31st May, or is it only those who live nearer to the exchange (or who are with certain ISP's) who will benefit?

My exchange says 31/10/11 for TalkTalk but it went live sometime in mid December and Samknows hasnt been updated yet. I knew this because when i put my phone number in on the Talk Talk line checker on their website it said i could get up to 8.6Mb ie more than 8mbit that ADSLmax would give me (in reality i hope to get 12-14mbps given my current line stats).

They are the only LLU provider on my exchange but there is no way i'm going with Talk Talk directly! I've signed up with a Talk Talk reseller called XILO (2nd on ISPReview) who use the TalkTalk equipment in the exchange buts that where it ends.

Others to consider are Vivaciti, ADSL24, Aquiss....dont go with Talk Talk directly, look at your connection now for starters! *

* assumes your tests are via a wired connection to the router and its not your exchange suffering congestion (try re-running the test at midnight say and see what you get).

EDIT
Also XILO dont have any Dynamic Line Monitoring or profiling like BT and Talk Talk (even on their LLU) do.....
