*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

Asked earlier in the thread but might have been missed.

Anyway of downloading this before purchasing it?

I've got the game in the post but don't want to have to wait to play it once it arrives. Just put serial in and play :D

Not officially - the account setup takes you through stages that you have to have activated before it will let you download the client. Might be able to find the installer, but again iirc you have to sign in first.

no worries then, i'll just have to wait and hope it installs ok from the DVD's. Oh how I miss the days of huge manuals, used to make installation times pass so fast!

I'm probably one of the few here, but I'm really really struggling to get into this.

Firstly, I'm not a huge Star Wars fan. I enjoyed the Jedi Knight games years ago and I've seen all the films, but I'm not a huge fan.

Secondly, I WANT to like this. All my mates are playing it. We were in a WoW guild together for best part of 5 years. It would be nice to carry on the guild, just in another game.

Something just isn't clicking for me though. I play for a bit then reach a point where I naturally get tired, log off and play something else. I had it on Pre-Order and got Early Access about 4 days before launch yet I'm still only lvl20 (Jedi Sage). I've got a lvl10 Sith Sorcerer too, but didn't like the Sith Story (dialogue options were all A) Be a **** B) Be a bigger **** C) Be a massive ****).

I've played a fair few MMO's and this is unusual for me!
With most MMO's and almost certainly with WoW I got hopelessly addicted. We're talking, getting up an hour early for work just to get a few more minutes of leveling done.

I'm just not getting that with this :(

It's not even a WoW vs ToR problem either. I WANT to like it. There's just something missing in it for me.

There are a few rough edges which niggle me while playing, but not enough to spoil the enjoyment I don't think.

Frustrating :(

Have you tried any of the other classes apart from Jedi?

Maybe it's just not for you. No point trying to force your self to play it.

I've tried Jedi Knight, Smuggler and Trooper. None of them higher than 5 or 6.

I picked Jedi Sage as in other MMO's I always pick Mage, Warlock or Paladin.
Sage seemed to be a mashup of Paladin, Priest, Warlock and Mage.

It just doesn't feel very MMO like at times. It's a bit quiet.
There seems to be this weird lag at times too. Doesn't always feel very responsive and fluid. It's not network I don't think (under 40ms).

Just not quite what I was expecting from BioWare.

Not meaning to be shallow either, but sometimes it looks ugly. Some of the textures appear really low res, then other times they look fab. Like of AA is kind of a shame too. Forcing in drivers isn't ideal.

Level 5-6 takes around an hour at a push 2 which isn't much - but that said seems to be not the game for you, maybe wait a few months and see how it progresses?

It isn't much, but that's all I've ever needed in other MMO's to get hooked in. My main is lvl20 though, which is a fair investment.
The voiced dialogue started off great, but eventually got annoying for me. I like reading.

Perhaps in a few months after a few patches and some of the rough edges have worn off it might become more appealing for me.

Done the Alderaan world Boss today, went for the Balmorra one as well (be he never spawned :(), then just before breaking up, a guildie said he was getting chased by sith on Hoth, so off we went, and ended up having some real fun for around 30/40 minutes slaughtering Sith left right and center ... aaah Open World PvP how I missed you :)

There's two PvE guilds that OcUK players are in on Frostclaw. One is Republic (It's a Trap) and the other Empire (TDR). See beyondtheclock.com. I'd imagine both would welcome new people :)

Your post pretty much sums up my thoughts too!

I feel they've taken a step back with this game in many aspects. The constant instancing for quests and whatnot means I rarely see anyone when out.

Never liked having a pet in any other MMO yet I'm forced to use companions.

Crafting is detached with the companion doing pretty much everything, IIRC the last Star Wars system was pretty in-depth with people making characters specifically for that as well as different grades of ore so that weapon/armour stats were different?!

I wanted to like this game and will continue to play till 50 (currently 29 with 3 lvl 10 alts) as I think the main story is the great... But can't see it lasting past that for me = (

The bottom line is unless you're pig sick of Warcraft or really like Star Wars there is no great reason to play this game. WoW does everything better. Of the 4 servers I've tried the Star Wars community is even more illiterate and juvenile than Warcraft's. You'd think it was impossible, but no.

Like the earlier poster I'm wanting to be hooked with something, but TOR doesn't really have 'it' going on. It's somewhat fun to do the story sections but that's all I've found enjoyable thus far.

The case for me lol...

Another point I was going to make was about the customisation or lack of... Every race is basically a variation of human but a different skin colour, all with the same combat animations... Seriously?! I'm far from being a role player (PVP server), but I like some kind of uniqueness.

Give it time guys. Like every other mmo that's come before it this one will evolve and be nothing like it is now.

It's like comparing Steam to Origin. Steam was crap to begin with but it adapted and evolved. 3 weeks is the length of an ants fart in mmo terms as you'll know.

Time will tell....

Think a lot of people playing this have come from a WoW backround.

My personal opinion is that this feels more like a Single player game with a MMO element weaved into it. Not to say that is a bad thing as I really enjoyed KOTOR, but the MMO part is lacking for me at the moment.

As people have said, development and feedback will only make this game better..not worse.

So much negativity around the MMO aspects, I stand by my PVP comments earlier regarding there being no one to kill (not sure when I will get to either) but just because the game has a great story and voice overs which other MMOs haven't, it doesn't degrade the MMO features of this game. There is a 'functional' chat system to communicate with other players, there are Warzones, plenty of group quests (for 2 and 4 people), flashpoints (dungeons) and a couple of operations (raids) and lots of people doing stuff in the game world in general. I think it's a null and void statement to say its a SP game with a multiplayer attached to it. You have a choice to group up and the good thing is that feature is working... though you can't always see if your friends are online.

reverse engineer

Hi,

I got a question on reverse engineering. Say I reverse engineer a health pack 1 that I have crafted and get a prototype health pack 1.

Is it worthwhile to continue reverse engineer the same health pack 1 after I got the prototype? Will I get more than one type of prototype from health pack 1?

An also, can you keybind a power directly to a key in the ini file without having to have it on the quickslot bar?

Thanks,

Yes, god yes!!! You'll get a purple "reusable" kit which never goes away when you use it. Same goes for the ones that gives buffs.
