Hi guys,

As title, im looking for a Low-cost portable 3G SIM MiFi modem that broadcasts Wi-Fi, so as to make a pocketable travel companion. A similar example includes the Huawei E585 which is available for around £75.

However, I don't want to pay that kind of price for something that i won't use all the time, and am wondering if anyone knows of any low-cost alternatives that do the same thing, China-made etc, for sub-£50. Only requirements are:

  • Must accept a 3G SIM and function as modem, ethernet port also welcome.
  • Must broadcast a Wireless signal for one or more devices (laptop, phone) to attach to.
  • Must be travel-sized (not a full-size modem).

I found travel routers for lower prices on a well-known online giant, but nothing that specifically acts as a 3G modem.

Product names or pages are fine, Google will do the rest. Thanks! :)

Isn't tethering to your moby an option then ? Cheap phone on PAYG 3 15 quid a month gets you All you can eat.

Mobile is theoretically an option... but I want something separate to my mobile that I can use a work dedicated 3G data SIM in. :)

jailbroken iphone set to broadcast a wifi network?
what i use whenever i need a portable app i use also lets use the iphone cable as well to directly link to a pc

Thanks for the suggestion, but I think my OP was pretty clear as to my requirements (I dont need a phone, just a dedicated 3G Wifi broadcasting device like the example I used), and id appreciate answers based on that. :)

You can get a new Huawei E5830 from the popular auction site for less than £50. There are also used ones for under £35. As others have said, I don't see that you have much choice given your requirements.

Found a 5830 for 50 quid brand new... guess I may as well just plump for it and an extra battery. Shame there are no cheap chinese ones though... thought that would be a given! :)

sidethink is right, and besides, there's not a huge market for this sort of device so it stands to reason that there's not a great range of products available.

Huawei IS cheap and Chinese.

Their modems are not your average cheap chinese goods pusher... they are a biggish name comparatively speaking, and used by 3 Network as their main modem supplier. I was talking about cheap chinese copies etc obviously. :)
