The most pirated game of 2011 was PC title Crysis 2, according to technology website TorrentFreak.

It was downloaded illegally an estimated 3.2 million times after its release in March last year.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, FIFA 12 and Portal 2 made up the rest of the top five most pirated PC games.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the most downloaded Wii game while Gears of War 3 took top spot on the Xbox 360 list.

The PS3 isn't included in the list as far fewer games are illegally downloaded for that console.

TorrentFreak says the number of downloads of the top titles in each category is slightly lower than last year.

Super Mario Galaxy 2, released in 2010, is the most pirated Wii game for the second year in a row.

Meanwhile, Fast Five was the most pirated Hollywood film of 2011.

TorrentFreak estimates that the movie was illegally downloaded more than nine million times last year.

The Hangover II, Thor, The King's Speech and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 were also in the top 10.

1. Crysis 2 (Estimated 3.9 million)

A shame indeed. But as a console player, it is getting beyond silly now with pricing. £50 for a game... I mean really????

When I was on PC, yes, I downloaded all the time before purchasing anything simply because I was tight and wanted to actually see if I liked the game. But now I am on console, I am forced to shell out so much more money!

On the PC, prime example... Far Cry 2, downloaded, what a load of **** after putting just several hours in. No purchase.

Another example... Downloaded Dirt, bought a 360 pad to play it with. Within hours I knew it would be a game I would play for weeks on end. Dished out my money to Codemasters, they deserved it.

That is how I used to work when I played PC... But now on console, it's so ****** expensive it makes me cringe!!!

Rant over :(

On a final note, if Dev's spent that extra few days putting together a bloody demo... might make them more money! OH AND A MANUAL, NOT A ****ING LEAFLET!!!!

agnes, console games have always been around the £40 - £50 mark from whenever I used to look in shops. The other option is to rent games from certain stores, which makes it cheaper.

Aye :( I know, got into a bit of a rage, £35 is reasonable to me.

It just annoys me :(

As it shows people only pirate crap games, with the exception of Xenoblade and maybe BF3 but I got bored of that far quicker than I thought I would.

Except it's not.

Because downloads are not "lost sales".

exactly

people who downloaded Crysis 2 did so because they knew it was pap and weren't paying for it.

There are of course the "try before you buy" crowd, who heard crysis 2 was pap and downloaded it. Then found it was actually quite good and went out and bought it.

Its impossible to measure each of these 2 types of downloads, so its pointless drawing conclusions on lost revenue.

It's the UK as far as I am aware, in terms of ratio (amount of people downloading to the amount of people in the country).

No way did 3million people in the UK download those games. That has to be global.

Would love to see countries with the most illegal downloads. My money is on it being almost all from Asia (inc. Russia and India)

Meh, I don't pirate tbh (unless a retro game I want isn't available commercially) but I can't blame those who do. What devs need to do is make it WORTH buying a game. Steam goes a long way on it's own. Online play to only those who pay does too. Always-online and rootkit style DRM does not.

Wish I'd waited for reviews/pirated FC2 :( Speaking of Codmasters, the last commercial game I pirated was TOCA: Race Drive 2. The fapping DRM in that - Starfarce IIRC (I purchased the game retail) - would not play ball with my computer at all.

Purchase game - Hours of frustration
Pirate game - Playing in 10 minutes

And obviously, 1 game pirated does not = 1 lost sale. IIRC some studies into piracy show prolific pirates are among the biggest consumers of legitimate media

And publishers are all  about the whole thing

Thats what demo's are for, almost all games on consoles and pc's have demo's so its a bit off to sight it as a reason for piracy.

Not that i have any axe to grind with people who pirate games, live and let live, but its not a particularly good excuse for piracy.

Almost all console games are down to £17.99 or less within 6 weeks of release, so just hold off, the only game ill buy on release every year now is Fifa, i get my moneys worth from it so i dont mind paying full whack (and its one of the rare games that hold value until close to the next release).

Except it's not.

Because downloads are not "lost sales".

3+ million downloads of a crap game does not equal 3+ million lost sales.

Means nothing, just as always.

I am sorry but I cannot see how you are right in this. If the only way to experience the game was to buy it then the downloads would equal lost sales.

Admitedly maybe some of those 3+ million people would choose not to buy the game however this does equate to lost revenue; which is the point here.

Yes some games are carp, however that is a different matter. It does not mean that they should be stolen as this is what it is basically - stealing. If a car is for sale; you don't nick it, put some hours in it and then go back to the owner and say 'you know what, I like it, I think I will pay for it now'.

Crysis 2 was a good game and deserved to be paid for. I do not think the majority of people who downloaded it would have then gone on and paid for it. Besides - wasn't a demo of Crysis 2 released?

I agree that the devs should make more quality demo's or go back to the old days of shareware. However for our part we should dictate with our cash and be a more savvy customer, i.e: don't pay for carp so they don't produce it. For instance, after the last title, I for one will wait for reviews of Dragon age 3 and certainly listen to you guys on the forum more before parting with cash. I will not punish Bioware or EA for producing drivel by stealing it. Which totally plays into the mindset of devs and publishers anyway where they then blame piracy for poor sales.

This hasn't been the case on PC for years. Most? Very few AAA PC games get a demo, just a blurry trailer not representative of gameplay repeated over and over

Oh and the privilege to play a "beta" a few weeks (lol) before release. For some developers I think that is an excuse to rush out broken games, which are sometimes never fixed properly

Of course they are.

Do you really 17.5m downloads were purely to try?

Obviously some will be people who will eventually buy the game, some will be people who couldn't get it working so bought it anyway - hence the conservative £20, rather than £39.99 RRP

However - I bet a massive % of that total will be the 'play for free because I can' crowd. I know a few myself.

That's what piracy is. Why do you think such a fuss is made about it? If illegal downloads didn't result in lost sales, why would anyone care?
