What is a stock car?

Oh noes, i specced cup holders on my new car - i better tell the insurance company that it's no longer "stock" and that it is now a modified car.

To be fair, a lot of insurance companies actually specify 'modifications or optional extras' to very explicitly mention both.

Whilst this might be true (even though the "optional extras" bit certainly isn't enforced as far as i have heard of), insurance companies don't care if you have the optional aux in port or optional cup holders, whereas Basher is saying the moment you tick ANYTHING on the options list, you immediately have a modified car and it is no longer stock.

I have never once had to declare the optional extras on any of my cars to any insurance company.

How ridiculous would it be to expect everyone to know, I dont know what was "standard" on my current vehicle, and what was ticked as an option as every spec level has differnt base options included. Everyone with a second hand car would fall foul if this was ever inforced, which thankfully it isnt!

This. Lets face it, with some cars the factory options can be another 50% of the cars value. Why shouldn't the insurance company expect to know about them as there should be a higher premium plus a potential bigger payout should anything happen to the car? Take my bosses new car, the optional extras amount to over £50k.

They ask for the value of the car - which of course takes into account the optional extras. If you buy a £30k car with £20k of options on it the value of the car is thus £50k, so they know what its worth whether they ask about options or not.

I've personally always considered stock to mean a car with all OEM parts, so a BMW with BMW fitted options is still stock in my eyes. Base/poverty spec is what I consider a car with no optional extras.

Dont cars like Ford Fiesta have different trims FLAME, GHIA, etc? and wont these reflect the extras? So as long as you tell them the correct year, trim, phase you should be cooler than a water melon.

If I am wrong on trims, explain.

My car is well specc'd. If someone referred to it as stock I would be offended. It has one wing mirror AND the interior mirror. Wind up windows. Seatbelts. Fitted (not working but fitted) heater. Oh yeah. Luxury :D

I was thinking the other day. My car is almost 50 years old, insurance companies don't expect me to go around the car and point out everything thats ever been modified on the car do they!!!?
