Swearing. What's acceptable?

I don't see it as a swear word though when used in that context.

Yet it is regardless. A vulgarity doesn't necessarily mean it is offensive...the word is still vulgar regardless of the context. There are some exceptions to this, but the most commonly used word your are referring to is certainly not one of those.

However the use of a swear-word for emphasis is unnecessary, there are other words that would convey the hugeness of your cake without resort to profanity.

Use a thesaurus....;)

Oh absolutely, but there are occasions where the satisfaction is too great for a well deployed sweary. ;)

If you smack your thumb with a hammer do you scream "oh diddums"? :D

Does anyone remember a certain few old codger moderators on here about 10 years ago taking exception to the word "bugger". I got a week suspension for saying it!

In an ideal world, people would only swear when it was entirely necessary but if swearing was permitted on OcUK it would be used in excess and bring down the tone of the place a few notches.

If you ever have an issue with a moderating decision, rather than moaning about it on the boards as to how rubbish we are, feel free to drop a mail, you'll more likely get a friendly response, and a definite answer to your question, and certainly would make me less inclined to ignore protestations that are publicly aired. :)

I'm still waiting.....;)

So a 6 year old child would be okay to say that in your view?

That's a tough one. I was brought up not to swear, but as i got older it gradually became more and more common around me until the point where it's natural for me to hear/say. For a kid to say it, probably not acceptable (in certain contexts, as is the same for adults) but really what does it matter. I could start calling everyone podding morons and it may catch on as a swear word and eventually be deemed unacceptable.

We've not said any of you are rubbish, just a complaint about things falling between interperations that's all. Least this way we get to chat directly and other people get an input and we all get to know the outcome. The last few threads are like a breath of fresh air to the old days I'll say that much!! :)

Can you still send trust messages when banned?

Sounds like you just need to learn to post better!

Evidentially !

Side note, no one has got back to me with regard to using words that is permitted on day time TV Pre-watershed:-

Frack - battlestar galatica
Frick - Scrubs

It's obvious what that is but its a made up word purely to get round the TV commission.

That is one of the exceptions I was referring to. It actually has a valid meaning in English Law up until 1926. However it is now commonly used in the pejorative.

And it depends on whether it's used referring to someone else, or yourself, or anything else. Plenty of people seem to use it in various contexts just fine but i got an infraction for calling top gear complainers one.

So do you think it's acceptable to say that in front of a room full of women & children?
