Microsoft takes legal action against comet.

Either way, I was under the impression that Comet was on the verge of failure but that might be misinformation, if correct could this be the tipping point?

Long and short of it as above, they were screwed - but a consortium was put together to keep them afloat.

Unfortunatly the bullet they appear to have dodged will still be taking down a good number of smaller retailers (and maybe some larger ones) over the next few months - loads of them were depending on a good xmas trading period to see them through rent, etc. early this year.

They're profiteering from a service the consumer was already getting for free by buying Windows.

Yes but so do pc shops that charge for simple things. They can claim charge for the service and man hours, not the tools themselves.
although inclined to be with comet, seeing microsoft trying to throw their weight around for money, its probably fair to say comet have been greedy charging customers over the price for a recovery disc. If thry were only charging £5 then i guess that covers blank cd and man hour, anything more and theyre ripping people off and not really looking after their customer but taking advantage of microsoft.
You pay for the key not the software dont you? As far as i was aware you can download/order an install disc for free from microsoft?

?

I don't think it has anything to do with profetering(well a little bit), but much more. The fact they where creating new license and sending the out, without paying MS. These weren't backups from the computer. I doubt there was. Any way for comet to verify they still had comp or that it was using same motherboard or anything else.

Toshiba laptop I was given had no recovery partition and no menu item to burn new DVD to restore OS. I had to pay £30 to Tosh for them to send me a ******* DVD-R with it on!

Not Comet related but still boils my blood.
