How much improvement in a 3-generation leap?

i would wait for the 7k series to come out, prices of the 6k series will drop and maybe even buy good quality used card? seeing most folks will be upgrading, then test it with your current setup, might be fine

if not then you can always upgrade to sb/ivy

Not a bad idea at all. Will have to make sure I don't wait too long though or I'll miss out :)

you need to measure inside your case, and look at the spec/dimensions on the card and see if it will fit, dont that card have power connectors at the side/front instead of at the end/rear of the card? if so that will give you a few more inches room

heres dimensions of that card (6870) 14.2 x 4.2 x 26 cm (HxWxD) so its 14.2 cm wide,4.2cm thick and 26cm long

Thanks. According to the Antec site:
Maximum video card size: 11"/279mm (Note: some video cards may block access to the adjacent hard drive bay)
And the Powercolor site (about my current card):
241mmx112mmx38mm
So I'd better get the measuring tape out at home before buying, just in case I have hard drives in the way and need to reorganise things first.

its nearly 4cm longer than your current card, your hdd bay wont matter so much if the power connectors plug in at the front of the card, plus you might be able to higher or lower your hard drives so that they miss the card, but measure and make sure first

quickest way would be to leave your current card in and see if you have around 3-4cm free space behind the card, maybe 2-3cm if the power cables dont plug in at the back

Well, it looks like there's room. The 6870 is 2cm longer than my 4870, and there's more than that spare. Also my hard drives are in other bays already so they won't be getting in the way.
