Creationism, the biggest troll of the internet.

Oddly enough, its the atheists who try and force their ideas on other people who annoy me more than the religious people who do so. I'm not quite sure why, I guess its because at least the religous type think they have a reason to "spread the word", their God commands them to, on the other hand atheists don't, they just don't seem to like people having their own beliefs, the vocal ones anyway.
I totally agree with this. Theres quite a lot of people on forums who try to win religious arguments. It's pointless. It's like arguing which console is better, One is better but at the end of the day it doesn't matter.

When the Bible describes Jesus' lineage, it only lists the men. It's like a family tree but with no mention of the mothers.

Male/female equality is a very modern thing. The Bible may not mention the daughters of Adam and Eve, but logic dictates they would have daughters.

That's pretty incestuous though.....

Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted Dec. 10-12, 2010, with a random sample of 1,019 adults, aged 18 and older, living in the continental U.S., selected using random-digit-dial sampling.
So you were incorrect.

Now think of the type of people do those phone interviews. I'm with the toaster on this one.

Also 1000 people representing 350 million, etc

1000 is definitely enough for this kind of thing, the chances of having a heavily skewed sample is really low. It might be out by a few percentages though, but these kind of sample sizes are definitely reasonable and are used all the time.

Do we know what the specific questions asked were though? That can have a huge effect on the results. I mean if they asked "do you have any doubts whatsoever about evolution", I can quite imagine perfectly rational people answering yes to that, and they'd get labelled as creationists.

According to the Bible, the first humans on the planet lived for hundreds of years.

One possibility is that they were biologically superior to us, but that is far from the only explanation of why this could happen.

Suffice to say, we cannot simply bound Adam and Eve with the rules of genetics and biology from the 21st century. We have literally no idea how they were able to live and breed successfully. The only thing we can be sure of is that they were recognisably human.

Nope, the question is pretty clear.

Ah, that it is. I'll still think steve-h had a point though, pointing out that the sort of people who do phone interviews are not likely to be representative of the overall population. An atheist will hear "we're doing a survey on religious beliefs, do you have ten minutes to spare?" and will most likely come up with an excuse to hang up. A religious person hearing the same thing is more likely to take it as an opportunity to preach to the interviewer.

I have no clue if that is correct and anyway atheists are such small percentage of the population. The vast majority of Americans, over 90% are Christians.

Like the vast majority of Brits are "christian". I know quite a few Americans and there is only one that is remotely religeous and she doesn't believe in creationism... On the other hand they are mostly young and well educated so would be the sort of person tulhat wouldn't be in or answer a phone survey... so id agree with tefal, take any survey like that with a pinch of salt.

Out of interest does that survey come attached with a sex or affluence question? Would be interesting to compare them to government sourced values...

How are you defining Americans? I know it's Wikipedia and with all the caveats that implies but this chart suggests it's around 75% would claim to be Christian in America. There's various surveys to support this quoted in the different articles on it but while (very) high proportionally it's not quite 9/10 of the population as Christian - I'd also have some doubt about how many are practicisng Christians in whatever sense they choose to worship and how many simply identify themselves thus because they've never thought about how they categorise themselves.

For the original post - the people who shout loudest tend to be the ones with the biggest axe to grind (to horribly mix metaphors). Most people who are moderate are unlikely to go to the lengths of posting a video to say "hmm, might be something in it, might not be..." so instead you'll normally just see the contributions from those who really have a point to push.

And therefore following your logic & the Biblical version, the entire gene pool is descended from 2 individuals, interbreeding together. Since there are major differences in many people alive today, doesn't that prove the existence of ongoing small scale genetic mutation and by extension an ongoing evolution even based upon the Bible's 'truths'?

Oops.

I thought the story of Adam and Eve was to be taken metaphorically? I.e temptation.

Please tell me you don't believe the entire human race stemmed from 1 couple, who lived in a garden with a talking snake? :p

It would explain why I have eight fingers! You know, as you interbreed you end up with extra limbs!

Just pay them no heed, same with the vocal atheists who try and shove their "no God" warcry down your throat. Equally annoying in my opinion.

I'm quite happy to let people just get on with their own beliefs, why some people have to make such a fuss about what does or does not exist or happen is beyond me. you're happy in your beliefs, they're happy in theirs, why you got to fight over who's wrong or right?

There's more important things to worry about in life.

Myself? I'm not religious. I don't see the point in worrying about it either. You'll find out when you die, why stress over it now!? :D

I can't say I've ever had any atheists turn up at my door, have you?

I actually can't believe that there's a Creation "museum" its baffling.
