Racist? Should Diane Abbott resign?

I know this has been briefly discussed in the thread titled 'Racism' but some people may not have seen it.

As you're probably aware if you check any news source, earlier on, Diane Abbott - a Labour party MP - posted a racist generalisation on Twitter. Details are here:

Shadow Health Minister Diane Abbott has apologised for any offence caused by comments she made on Twitter, after claims they were racist.

She said she had not meant to generalise when she wrote: ''White people love playing 'divide & rule'".

It was a response to criticism of media use of "black community leaders" after the Stephen Lawrence murder trial.

Labour's Chuka Umunna said party leader Ed Miliband had told Ms Abbott her remarks were "unacceptable".

In a statement, Ms Abbott said: "I apologise for any offence caused.

"I understand people have interpreted my comments as making generalisations about white people. I do not believe in doing that."

Now, I don't think what she said is the worst thing in the world obviously, but I'm more irritated by the fact that if a white person in that position had said similar comments about black people, they would be out of the door faster than you can blink.

I'm also aware this isn't the first time she's made race-related remarks in this sort of manner. She seems to be a fairly repugnant woman in general so she would be no great loss to anything.

Her efforts to backtrack have been pretty poor as well. What was more concerning was the fact there are quite a few black people who are entirely behind her sentiments as well.

Your thoughts?

Seems a bit extreme to resign over that, but it depends on the context it was used in IMO.

Edit: just read the article, maybe a resignation but definitely a proper apology (teaches me to post after only reading OP :o:D).

Of course she shouldn't resign!

Racism toward white people is all in our heads!

We are the racist's! Remember that and we can get back to the normal order of things.

Yes she should - if it was a white MP about black people, they would have been sacked.

Oh and she didn't even apologise for saying it - only for any offence it caused.

I think the serious part of what she said was the sudgetion that white people are still trying to the keep the 'black man down'. Is there an organized campain to do this?

The question here isn't should she resign. The question here is: if a white politician was making derogatory statements about black people, would he or she be able to get away with it?

I think she should resign for being an idiot.

Racism is nothing to do with it, just pure idiocy as she has the place for being part of a political party not an intelligent human being...

Yip.

It's all organised, ran and ruthlessly carried out within the confines of her own head.

She should do a patronising race relations course and some cringworthy public visits to some "white areas" to show she isn't a racist, anything less would be hypocrisy

Hopefully when DirtyDog reads this he realises that a lot of people have called her a racist. White people, brown people and black people!

Even before this I couldn't stand the woman. And as for her comments being taken out of context, what a load of nonsense. I've just read them in context and they don't sound any less racist.

If it were a prominent white person publicly making generalisations about non-whites she'd be one of the first to publicly declare her outrage.

She won't resign, she won't be pushed out either. Which is a shame because I really can't stand that *****.

I think shes seen undercover brother to many times.

She just lives about 50 years in the past and cannot get over what happened back then.

Move on, the rest of the world has including the black population, it's idiots like this (and equally bigotted racist's on the other side of the fence) who keep the problem simmering.

She is just as bad as some skinhead in the EDL running round Bradford beating people up, difference being this moron is close to power and could cause some real damage.

Of course she won't.

As I said above there seems to be a political (as well as media) blindness when it comes to minority to majority racism. It is simply brushed under the carpet as inconvenient or excuses made, clearly the only racist's and bigot's in the the world are white :rolleyes::rolleyes:

The excuses and hand wringing will begin straight away from the white's and probably the only one's who criticise will be other blacks as it seems even criticising people is racism these days. Hell I am probably racist now for voicing my opinion against her.
