Racist? Should Diane Abbott resign?

Mountains out of mole hills. She’s put her mouth or is it foot in it again. That’s really nothing new. She’s apologised and time to move on.
 
What a stupid, stupid thing for a politician to say :confused:

She should be sacked. No one with even half a brain would tweet that if they had her position.

So it's alright as long as you apologise? She is a racist politician regardless of how minor her comment may of been, it's a big no-no in the world of politics, she should resign.

Failure to declare earnings:

In 2004, following a complaint made by Andrew Rosindell MP, Abbott was investigated by the Committee on Standards and Privileges regarding payment she had received from the BBC. They found she had failed to declare earnings of £17,300 on the Register of Members' Interests which had been received for appearances on the television programme This Week. The Committee upheld the complaint and required Abbott to apologise to the House.[36]

Alleged racist remarks:

In 1996, she commented that at her local hospital "blonde, blue-eyed Finnish girls" were unsuitable as nurses because they had "never met a black person before".[37] The secretary of the all-party Finland group of MPs, Conservative Ian Bruce responded by accusing her of "using racial stereotypes", adding: "All Scandinavian countries have people from African and Caribbean countries living there. It shows ignorance to make such remarks."[38] She referred to David Cameron and Nick Clegg as "two posh white boys" in May 2010.[39]

On 4 January 2012, Abbott tweeted that "White people love playing 'divide and rule' We should not play their game #tacticasoldascolonialism" which led to accusations of racism.[40] After being informed by the Labour Party that the comment was unacceptable she apologised for "any offence caused by" the comment and stated had not intended to make generalisations about white people.[41]

No, not if you're calling for her to resign over allegations of racism. The only 'big difference' is that one is visibly far more racist than the other.

Totally different situations, surely?

The BNP don't consider what they say to be wrong, and this is why the majority of people don't like them.

The Labour party are surely meant to at least be a bit better than the BNP (though their leader is just as stupid, in a different manner) and don't want to be upsetting people by having racist MP's?

He should, he just won't but then that's Nick for you, he will never accept he is wrong and to be honest isn't really a major player politically and in fairness no-one really cares. Diane however is a prominent member of one of the major parties and should know better, she is in a much more precarious position.


Oh and because she is black (just kidding) :)
 
She should be sacked, I don't even see what there is to consider. She made a racist comment, end of.

It is rather stupid of someone, as high up in politics as she is, to make a generalisation relating to a particular race. Especially as the generalisation being made was a negative one.

I doubt very much whether you know enough about her to be able to brand her a racist politician. One comment taken from titter doesn't make her one.

The major difference would be the parties they represent - one party is openly racist the other isn't. I doubt Labour members are particularly happy about her comments whereas BNP members are likely to be less fussed about Nick Griffin. Also Griffin doesn't actually have a cabinet or shadow cabinet position to resign from in the first place.
