Driving with a cold "hits drivers like 4 double whiskies".

Im i the only one that has no problem with this. Its common sense that if your ill enough to effect your driving that much then dont drive. Same as driving when excessivley tired. As far as im cocerned both of those are just as bad as drink drivin.

Edit: should make clear im not talking about a simple mild cold but if you have a heavy coldl/flu

The difficulty is what do you define as a 'heavy cold'? Alcohol levels are relatively easy to establish but as far as I'm aware there's no easily definable metric for 'cold level'.

What I think should happen is that if you are driving around and have a cold it's all completely fine. If you have an accident it's all completely fine and your insurance company should pay out. If you injure/kill someone and are noticed to be quite ill, then a judgement needs to be made as to whether your decision to drive in that state amounts to neligence and a significant contributing factor to the event. If it does, then there should be ramifications.

I am fairly sure that what I have just described is exactly the case today. Insurance companies wrangling out of claims based on drivers being a bit under weather sounds like optimism on their behalf.

I bet the Police said nothing of the sort. They most likely said that people who are unfit to drive shouldn't and that if they do and it amounts to careless driving, driving without due care and attention etc then they could be prosecuted.

Almost certainly. I've just been reading Ben Goldacres "Bad Science" book, that has loads of examples like this. The amount of stuff that either gets entirely fabricated or twisted to suit their agenda is outrageous.

I was in the GP's the other day and one of the public information TV's had a bit about "high asprin doses to prevent bowel cancer", with the linee
"Invariably the media have reported that high doses of asprin help prevent bowel cancer, the study only refers to a specific type (with the name of it) and you should consult your doctor". (I may not have got it 100% correct, but basically it was saying that the media, had as normal taken it out of context).

I agree with Burnsy, the Police if they've said anything will have made the normal blanket statement about if you're unfit to drive you may be subject to careless/dangerous driving if caught.
Basically the same thing they'd do if you were at an accident and they found out you'd fallen asleep at the wheel because you'd been up for the past 24+ hours, or were applying make-up/shaving whilst driving.
