Racist? Should Diane Abbott resign?

This may have been said before but i just wanted by bit of beef.. How come ITV news last night couldn't bring themselves to say she was a racist? Then the editor of the "The Voice" (which I have no idea why this is allowed as this is a racist publication itself) said there are for more pressing matters. Yep - when it suits hey!

She may not be a racist but her comment certainly was.

If we are to except equality than it works both ways.

Ahhh, racism, the only thing in this world that applies to all cultures and skins aside from white people...

Love how when people make racist comments about white people nothing ever happens, but as has been said so many times, if the tables of turned, regardless of skin, the white person would be out of the door faster than a speeding bullet and labelled a sick racist...

Joke to be honest.

Let's just wait until the dust settles on this, before concluding that nothing will happen.

Who cares? Does this actually affect any one of us personally? People worry too much about what other people do, even if it has no bearing on them whatsoever. Chill out a bit, relax, have another coffee. Enjoy life rather than worrying about other people all the time.

She's used to voicing her racism without any sort of backlash, since it's socially and politically acceptable racism because it's against "whites". So of course she'd think she'd be able to say such a thing without any sort of backlash. I'm surprised it's attracted any attention at all and I'm sure it will blow over quickly.

It's normal for there to be some groups that it is normal to be irrationally prejudiced against. The "acceptable target" groups change over time, but the basic idea remains the same - "It's OK against this group, it's wrong against that group".

I don't think people will let it go that easy. Simply because had this been a white person saying something similar about black people the world would be going crazy.

I don't allow such petty talk to phase me... What does annoy me is when politician and the media go on and on about it.

Her racial views were not needed. Does this make her racist... Perhaps... Who knows.

We're all prejudice in one way or another.. so perhaps we're all racist.

And to the fellow calling the voice paper "racist" lol I must disagree. Go to any newspaper stand and you find papers aimed at many different cultures and races. How on earth can it be racist to create a paper aimed towards a particular race? To even make such a statement is laughable.

It's like saying the men's health magazine is sexist because its a men's magazine.

She's an MP. She's supposed to represent people. It might be that people don't identify with a racist.

I believe it's wrong because we shouldn't care about the colour of a policeman's skin. I struggle to see why it even matters.

If those who complain really see it as an issue then perhaps they should go and sign up.
I agree.

I don't believe that black or white people are different at all, removing any need for a set criteria of a certain percentage of each group - because it's meaningless.

If all the best people who took the test were black, I'd be happy with a BETTER police force which was all black, the same applies to White, Chinese or Indian etc - best person for the job - I really don't care what colour they are in the end.

That's what equality is.

If the reason is to give a good representation of the community, are they implying that "all black people are the same", so if we get 2 black people we are "catering for the needs of them" - I think people should agree that our social diversity is a little more deep & complex than skin colour.

You get black & white rockers, ravers, chavs, posh people, criminals, lazy people, scum, scientists & office people - I'd say these sub-sets are more linked than skin colour & if you wanted to represent the population you would split it by more important things than skin colour (which is completely meaningless)

Black people & white people are the same, I know some white people who are more into black culture than my black friends - what about goths?, they are a small social group - also a goth is more different to me than the average black guy is.

This is why positive discrimination is a flawed concept, because regardless of the agenda is still discrimination .

Discrimination against a white person to even things out for black people is just as bad as the first set of discrimination they are trying to combat.

If there was any real equality these days she should have been sacked instantly, just like if any white politician had said a similar comment, but there isn't, and she hasn't been.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you, and god knows I'm a champion of free speech. It wasn't that her remark particularly offended me, it's just the hypocrisy of the situation. I think we can all agree that a white MP in a similar situation would have been sacked pretty much immediately.

She is anti racist, but is one her self.

No she is not anti racist she will fight for what she deems her community whether it be women or to use the term she hates "black community"(mainly the latter). Rarely it seems has she fought for the rights of other aspects of the community be it other minorities or not.

I'm almost tempted to say she is playing divide and rule herself trying to protect a select group of people at the sake of the wider socity (example trying to protect black jobs from the public sector cuts and also the black jobs fund).

Firstly, it happened two days ago - give it a minute. Secondly, Labour as a liberal party aren't going to be in a hurry to sack their flagship black female MP.

Is she your MP then? One could argue that she may actually be representing the views of the majority of her constituents.

That is a more interesting point, in which case the argument might be over whether Labour want her affiliated to their party. Another argument would be that as she's not my MP, it shouldn't be my choice when she is sacked, but should be a matter for her constituents to vote her out at the next opportunity.

Agree totally - I know if my MP did something similar I'd certainly be putting my tick in a different box.

Really? Are you sure this isn't an over hyped media reaction.

She said a racist comment, no one can deny that but it doesn't make her a racist and it should be so if it were the other way round either but it isn't, which is wrong. It's all about tolerance and how it's perceived by the individual. I'm just as annoyed about the equality of this but to react and make this more of an issue just makes it all worse. The fact she's an MP makes no difference. She should apologise (which she has done) and that be the end it and maybe others can learn that we all say do stupid things from time to time..

Chuka Ummuna said she should be judged on her record of championing racial equality.

She hasn't championed racial equality - she has championed black rights. That isn't the same thing.

Championing 'your own' is easy. Championing others, or those you don't like, is much harder.
