Get Sandy or wait for Ivy?

Everyone keeps saying things like "wait for ivy", but you can always resell your 'old' equipment. It doesn't immediately explode in value as soon as Ivy comes out, it will still be good stuff.

I'm personally waiting, but only because I've spent a good bit of cash upgrading, and getting a laptop for uni recently.

when ivy is out, there will be another successor to it, and you might want to wait for that as well...

buy now and be happy for a year or two, then upgrade when the need arises.

When I look at the features of the BD mobo, Im hoping that Iy Basically brings the SB platform uptodate with those features.

Such as twin 16x PCI-Ex planes or faster etc (even tho its PCI Ex 3)

My i2600k setup is very good, but the X79 setup 3630K-E is upto 30% better according to all reviews.

Damn this PC Enthusiast mindset. Now I want a new SSD, X79 Mobo, i7 3630K-E... bah!

Still baffles me why intel developed a mobo for SB with only 8x PCI Ex lanes

Its a flaw and there is no denying it. It doesnt matter if technically it doesnt make too much difference to performance, as your average joe doesnt know that, sees one mobo with 8x lanes and another with 16x lanes, and goes with the 16x lane.

I for one, held off a SB set up, for this reason, and of course the lack of PCI E 3 lanes.

Why spend money on something that is not ready for the future, especially when Ivy is only months away.

While i agree you can always wait for the next thing when new hardware is as near as ivy it doesn't hurt to wait if your like me and had the same setup for quite a while. I am hoping by the time ivy is out the new b3 bd chips will be out as well and i have some sort of choice. Also i only upgrade infrequently health problems mean building a new pc is not that easy for me it isn't something i want to do on a regular basis so waiting till the latest stuff is out is best anyway :).

Yea, technically, I would have gone BD as well, as I really wanted a 8 core chip.

When is Pile Driver due or any BD refresh? I think the point with the new FX chips from AMD, it wont be untill windows 8 comes around that we will truely start seeing what they can do.

I suppose their view is that if you want full 16x-16x SLI/Crossfire for 5% extra performance then there's no reason why you can't afford the slightly more expensive LGA1366/LGA2011 platforms. It would increase the cost of LGA1155 CPU's to add another 16 lanes and not a lot of people would use them anyway.

I was in the same boat about 2 weeks ago and had a thread going asking the same thing, I decided my i3 at 4.2 was good enough but seeing 4 threads running at 90% gaming, today I bought a MSI GD65 and 2500K to be built tonight. If ivy comes out in April it will be May before I wait to see if there are any probs and I don't think the performance increase is worth the wait..

The GD65 is gen 3 so it will take a ivy cpu and Z77 doesn't seem to offer anything over Z68 for me..

Nothing wrong with 2500k which is top class still and will be for a while. By the time ivy comes out another chip will be on the way, so as said above be happy for now unless you specifically want ivy.

I am surprised many people can just keep upgrading. I thought we were in a recession.

I wouldn't bother with sandy or ivy but wait for haswell. ;) I only ever upgrade if I need to with a new architecture. The inbetweens are pointless unless you have a really old CPU.

Hopefully my Q9550 can keep going until Haswell!

Anyone thinking of upgrading from Core Duo chips might as well wait for Ivy Bridge in April. I dont think you can call Ivy Bridge an 'in between'. What with pci 3.0, Tri-gate tech and lower power comsumption, its worth waiting a few months.

What will Haswell bring to the party?

Also Im interested in the next Gen AMD chips to see if they can fix BD. But they are probably a long way off. This year even?
