I just don't understand the appeal of steam?

I haven't attacked you in two threads

Moving on from actually arguing, the thing I don't get about your post is that you seem to think that the convenience of not having to mess around with disks/patches/etc is nullified because you're willing to do it. Is that right or have we misunderstood one another?

Yes you have misunderstood but it is OK. The guy below made this post:

I have over 150 games on Steam. All in one place. All auto update. All accessible from one page.

How the deuce would one manage if they were all seperate .exe?

Then I posted saying it could be done and can be grouped up into icons on the desktop. Then you came in waving your hands screaming I have installed all 100 games at once and patched them all at once. I must be a geek with nothing else to do with my time blah blah waffle waffle. When I never said that, I also never said it was faster or easier. I just stated you can have lots installed like steam. I also only patch games that I am about to start.

So no I never said that, I also never said steam was rubbish. I just said it can be managed and made to look nice.

Well I am glad this time you have saved has allowed you to come on here and attack me in two threads well done. Yes I have installed my games that I get, sometimes 2 a week depending on sales. Yes I have patched the ones that I play, I only play to finish I don't start random games. So only ones patched are ones I started/completed. That must make me some kind of super PC geek

Does that include patches released to fix things while you're actively playing the games? I assume you check frequently for patches then right? Not just once at the start of playing and never again?

I only check before playing yes m8, unless the game breaks on me during playing I would just leave it patched at the start. I guess some games do still break but I have been lucky so far. But read my above post on this page. I never said once it was better this way. I dont even know why frenchtart said it was

Good points-Steam is only good for sales and nothing else.

Bad points-Full price games are a ripp off and can be found on retail far cheaper

Now thats just pure lazy if you can't find a patch within seconds:confused:

Exactly my feeling as well. People paying a false premium for what should be free of charge.

As to playing my games on my pc and laptop, i just use a crack!

It seems that steam is somewhat of a big deal but I don't understand the appeal of it? I thought it was mostly a PITA most of the time? So I guess it boils down to...

What is it about steam that you like and why?

Stoner81.

I liked it when my hard disk crashed Steam had my saved games, nothing lost. No need to re play though the first half the game I was playing at the time.

Easy to play with friends, no messing around with IP address, server or other settings. Just rick click join game.

Can see what my friends are up to. I had an unexpected day off work, my friends play games at dinner time which I did not know about at the time. I had no idea and got invited to their daily match's as they spotted me on Steam.

Steam is great. I've had the same steam folder since HL2 came out. I keep it on my second drive and if you reinstall/upgrade windows you just download the client and point it at your games. Job done.

You don't even need to download the client each time - literally just run steam.exe

On very rare occasions (I've never needed to do this!) some people may need to delete the clientregistry.blob file.

Bleh. Trying to gloss over the discussion that was going nowhere but you don't want to let it go. I'll agree to disagree. You can agree to do whatever :)

Steam has evolved over the years to be much more than it was when it started (i first got it on release with HL2). I'm much more inclined to use it now. The library feature is the best and being able to have all your games on demand is no longer the future. It's the hear and now and all the better for it (as long as they don't start phasing old games out in a few year!)

I would clarify that I'd like to see Valve try and lure EA back in as Origin is a pile of balls.

Try re-installing Neverwinter Nights 2, Sacred 2, Anno 1404 or GTA IV from disc then patching up to the latest versions. I'll see you in a few days.......;)

GTA takes 20 mins actually to install and be patched by GFWL. One of those insert disc one and go for a coffee or do something for a bit, come back and insert disc 2, walk away again. Come back and patch it lol

OK i'll bite.

Patch it how? Does GFWL patch it automatically? Or are websites involved?

The 1 game I've had to use GFWL on was an utter disaster, and finally managed to get it to run in SP mode unpatched, thankfully it was a console port so relatively stable.

I find the steam download speeds decent enough, I stick it on the Ukraine server and it maxs out my 50mb connection, giving me 5-6mbps , games fly down the line

GFWL did auto patch it yeah. I did not have to search for anything on GTA apart from a nodvd patch. It was a painless install actually.

Seemed to have stirred up a hornets nest it seems with such a simple question (turns out it's not as simple as I thought)...

The main thing that I have gotten from reading is that people will pay for steam (even at a higher price) simply for the sake of convenience? I would rather save money personally but that's me :D

Most of the time I don't patch games at all since they mostly work for me. I might have a wander over to steam and have a look at what all the fuss is about, though I don't do online gaming I can't be bothered having some trumped up 15 year old handing me my butt on silver platter.

PS - This thread has been an interesting read so thanks for the input folks!

Yeah , I would say out of all the things I listed, its convenience which is my biggest factor. Simply, I am too damned lazy to go to the shop and buy a game off the shelf, and too impatient to wait for something to be delivered when I want something. Sometimes I pay an extra fiver for a steam game because of that, but then again, I would have spent that fiver on fuel driving to the shop anyway, so its a close enough call that I'm willing to spend a tiny bit extra and just download it from the comfort of my cosy warm house :D

There's definitely a time vs money argument to be had about the convenience thing. Personally I find that paying an extra £5 is more than worth it. It's perfectly fine if that's not the case for you - it's a personal preference really :)
