Evening people,

I'll give you a little background to this. I have never really tried in life to excel in anything I do. At school I never revised or put in a great deal of effort into the subject's. I was always able to 'pass' without doing it, which I think was my downfall. Had I struggled to pass I would have made the effort.

After school, I went to college for a year. I studied Geography, Biology and Business studies. I got a AS level in Geography and Business Studies. As I never made the effort there either, therefore I failed biology.

Fast forward 2-3 years, I'm 20, and work in a retail store stacking shelves for a living. I admit my wage 'compared' to other job's that are like for like is decent. However, new year and all that, I need to figure out what I am doing. For some reason I feel if I don't sort thing's now I never will. I have realised that I only get one shot at this and why waste it?

So, I'm just looking for a little guidance. I have a keen interest in computers. I did start a web design course, however that faded out because it was home based and I just couldn't knuckle down bring myself to read page after page of jargon on a powerpoint presentation. I also have a keen interest in History and Geography. They were my favourite subjects at school. I just find things about nature and the world we live in today fasinating. I would love to see the aurora light's one day.

However, I don't have a clue what job or career I wish to take. I see some of the jobs that people have on ehere and I think they sound brilliant, however I always have this feeling I could never achieve those jobs. I feel that is probably my problem at the minute, a feeling I will never achieve anything or look back and be proud. I need something to challenge me. Think I have lived my life by the quote "Hard work has never killed anyone, but why take the risk". I need to change my approach.

What would people's suggestion's to actually move on with my life? I have applied for numerous job's however I have not have any success.

Please ask me any question's, I will answer any.

Let's ignore all the other nonsense for just now. Why have you never tried to excel before in your life?

Why to try excel if you could get away with not doing.
Happened to me with standard grades, I got away with minimum then the shock of highers made me pull my socks up...for a bit.

He's posting about how terrible his life is and you're asking me to qualify why asking him about his obvious reluctance to push himself might be a problem? Really?

Who taught you to use apostrophes so very liberally?

I do apologise, my punctuation and grammar is seriously appauling.

Exactly as ask_scotland88 said, I could always get through with making minimal effort. Also I was young and believed that life would come easy... I was wrong.

I wouldn't say I'm posting about how bad my life is, more some advice on how I could make a better one. Make a future for myself.

Are you a Gayer ?

No... Atleast I don't think so.

What do you really like spending your time doing? Could you make money from this?

Can you be enthusiastic about History, Nature or Geography? If so, consider becoming a TV presenter. If you are good with computers, you can just make the videos yourself, put them on YouTube and monetise.

When I was at school back in 19 oat cake I never tried but got half decent grades, mostly 2s and 3s. I was good at Geography too. I sucked at IT when we used BBC Micros. Now I work in IT. :| Find something you enjoy and keep trying at it. Eventually it will work out for you! :)

Recently I tried to buy some item's in bulk for cheap and sell them for a profit. I thought this would give me some motivation and ideas and it worked somewhat. I did sell the things I bought. I took a while, for little profit, I lack patience sometimes I think.

I think with the current job market and lack of qualifications I have, I will be waiting an awful long time. I won't give up though, otherwise I will be in my current job forever.

Do you work full time or is it just part time, also do you live with your parents?

I will tell you that with some people having parents paying all your bills (well most) and them just doing enough to get by, they have their possessions at the end of the day and it sort of doesn't make them want to strive forward because at the end of the day they have a comfy bed, food, a computer and etc.

When did you lose your virginity.....

Really shouldn't have opened up this option in GD.......

more seriously, Open University might be an idea, however again you might struggle to knuckle down.... Do you have a gf/parent who could push you to work? I'm 20 and spent much of my Younger years with the same approach to work. Thankfully the gf came just before my GCSEs and made me knuckle down quite a bit :) wasn't too late for me.

Alternatively, maybe try and get into a low position in a company in an industry you're interested in and work up through their training schemes.

Thought about Archaeology? I'm in pretty much the same boat as you, I thought about doing something with Open University but havnt really investigated that yet.

OP, look, you're going to get a load of people telling you that IT/IS 1st, 2nd or 3rd line support is what you should focus on because that makes up a huge percentage of the forum members jobs.

Go elsewhere for guidance unless of course you want guidance in those roles.

Have you talked to anyone who isn't a faceless no one on an internet forum?

1 question. What do you want to achieve with your life?

One day sooner than you think you'll wake up middle aged, you have to reconcile your regrets
