I recently bought some components, from another etailer, to upgrade my ageing C2D system. The new components were:

Asus P8Z68 V-Pro
Intel i72600K Retail
G-Skill - F3-12800CL9D 8GBX RAM
Crucial M4 128Gb SSD

I built it up in October and it worked first time. In December though I came in and found the machine on. I had to hard reset it and it wouldn't boot into the BIOS or anything. I spoke to their CS and they said the mainboard might be at fault and they raised an RMA. It was found to be faulty and replaced very quickly.

I rebuilt everything and the system still wouldn't boot, it would stop at the RAM detection stage. I raised an RMA again and the modules were found to be faulty and replaced.

I've just received the new RAM. I've installed it and the same thing has happened, the system won't boot. It stops at the RAM and the onboard LED lights up next to the memory modules. I've tried using the MemOK! Switch to tune the system to the memory but to no avail.

The rig is on my desk with just the memory and CPU installed and just mouse, Keyboard and monitor attached.

Any ideas one what could possibly be wrong? The only thing I haven't replaced is the CPU and HDD. Could the CPU be faulty and causing this? I've never had a faulty CPU.

Thanks.

You been on the manufacturer of the motherboard and made sure the memory modules you have are listed in the compatible section for that motherboard and BIOS version?.

The RAM is CL 9-9-9-24 and the recommended timings are 8-8-8-24. Could this be the cause? The board has a feature that it can tune itself for incompatible memory modules. I've tried this and it won't work. :(

The RAM is rated at 1.5V

I've tried it with 1 stick and in an assortment of slots. No joy.

I've been trying the modules in the different RAM slots individually and they both work, but only singly and only in one slot!

Hyburnate, see OP for board and RAM details.

For anyone with this board the working slot is B1, which is also not the recommended slot for using one memory module.
According to the manual the modules are labelled A1, A2, B1 and B2.
For single DIMM use, use A2
For two DIMMs use, use A2 and B2

BIOS is ver 0801
Any ideas?

Sounds to me you have an unmatched pair of ram.

I had this once.

I would look under the heat sinks on the ram and make sure they look identical bet there not I had some ram that was "matched pair" when I tested them they did not work together I took the heat sinks off and there was obvious differences.

That's not a good idea for RAM that's in warranty.

If the system will boot with both sticks individually then the SPD tab in CPU-Z will tell the OP if they're identical.

Here are the CPU-Z screenies. They appear to be a matched pair.
Module 1

Module 2

Excuse the crappy resolution....

Any other ideas why they won't work in any other slot than than 3? Another faulty board?

Sounds like it to me. Only one working slot points to a dodgy board imo. The only other solution would be a bios update, but it looks like you've tried that. Sorry to hear your bad luck, I know how maddening it can be!

Well, I bought and tried a set of Corsair Vengeance memory from the Asus QVL list and I get exactly the same thing. So this board is a duff and going back.

I've been building PC's for about 15 years and have never had 2 faulty boards like this. Saying that I've not used an Asus board for about 10 years....
