I watched this earlier and came to the conclusion that it's very underrated. I think this for two reasons.

First, it has what is possibly the finest car chase in a Bond movie and one of the best of all time.

Second, Jonathan Pryce was superb as Elliot Carver, and creates one of the best Bond villains I have seen.

What do you think?

EDIT: I also like to think that this is Rupert Murdoch's end game, and that Bond will go in to destroy him. :p

It's the line when M says, 'PM would have my head if he knew we were investigating him [Carver]' that makes me think there could be a subtle link on the go. ;)

It sucks, as his plan for world domination is to print newspapers. I don't particularly like any of the Brosnan films other than Goldeneye, which is a shame, as he was a decent Bond :(

I always loved it but it's been years since I watched it. I remember being sure it was better than Goldeneye, but I'd have to watch them again to know exactly.

I also loved the Tomorrow Never Dies game on PS1, absolutely blasted that I did :D

:edit: Just watched the Trailer. What an awesome film that was :D

:Edit2: "Back seat driver."

ENDLESSLY COOL.

:edit3: It also has an absolutely winning title song. Reminds me of being that awesome age where I really genuinely thought I was Bond :p

It's certainly not the worst of the Bond title songs in the Brosnan era, I'll give you that much. :p

Actually I've just relistened to it and it's not bad, I wouldn't say it's quite up there with some of the best but it's decent enough.

I liked Pearce Brosnan as Bond. Better than Tim Dalton anyway.

Timothy Dalton was pretty good as Bond, at least in terms of faithfulness to the books, he got closer to the slightly amoral nature of Bond than most have.

//edit I don't think Tomorrow Never Dies is a great Bond film or particularly underrated but I might have to rewatch it over the weekend and see if that changes.

It has some great action bits, probably the best action bits of all the Brosnan Bonds, but the story is a bit pants

Oh my goodness, how did I forget to mention the soundtrack, it's pure bliss!

Sheryl Crow <3

Agreed, this is the era in which I really started to get into these films, so I have some fondness for Tomorrow Never Dies. I still have the VHS somewhere. Jonathan Pryce plays the part of Elliot Carver very well. The arrogance and slight megalomania are almost believable.. Shame about his henchmen and so on being a bit wooden, and the UK Navy seeming a bit tame in some ways. I don't think that was realistic, but it works.

It's a good balance of light-heartedness and has all the elements of what a modern Bond film is expected to deliver, though obviously the last two have deviated from this classic formula. In a good way though, even if the plot and script of Quantum of Solace is shocking.

Good, but not as good as the Goldeneye tank chase scene. On my phone so can't link to it, can someone do the honours?

This one?
Sadly embedding is disabled but you can click though.

I did rewatch Tomorrow Never Dies this afternoon, it's decent enough but not one of the best Bonds. I'm also not convinced by Jonathan Pryce as the bad guy, he's just a bit too hammy in it for me to take him as a proper villain but again he's far from the worst in the whole lot.

Can't argue with any of that. TND sucks, IMO.

I like Sheryl Crow, but the song was turd as well.

I hope Mendes makes a better film than Forster did. I'm not going to hold my breath though.

Eh, Dalton acted very poorly and the films have that very cheap 80's type feel to them, the fact that the films were written in a slightly darker Bond style doesn't make Dalton a good Bond, had it been another actor the script would still have been the same. The Bond's he did weren't bad films, I just don't think he was a very good Bond, he always came across as a bit smarmy and common rather than smooth and, well, Bond like.

As for Tomorrow never dies, its a kids film, its all flash and no substance, the guy who played Carver was abysmal, the plot was abysmal, most of the action was laughable, and the big scarey boat eating thing that randomly goes into a ship then turns into a game of pacman moving up and down at will.

Hatcher wasn't a good bond girl, Pryce was awful, Pryce's top henchman was..... one of the worst in all the films to date, just terrible.

Just about the only thing that makes Tomorrow Never dies not terrible...... is Bond got worse again for World is not enough and Die Another Day actually manages to make TND look almost competent.
