Valve’s Steam platform continues its remarkable growth.

In a release touting its 2011 accomplishments, Steam revealed better than 100% unit sales growth for the seventh consecutive year. The service also grew to offer over 1,800 games to its 40 million-plus accounts.

Earlier this week, we reported Steam had also eclipsed the 5 million concurrent user mark during their fantastic Holiday Sale, which earned the service a mention in our Best Bargains of 2011 feature.

The press release also brings to light the overwhelming amount of data Steam disseminated in 2011–more than 780 Petabytes.

For some context, a petabyte is equal to one quadrillion (a one followed by 15 zeroes) bytes, or a thousand terabytes. If that didn’t help, consider that the Large Hadron Collider in Europe, which is basically the most complex machine ever created by man, produces about 15 petabytes of data each year.

To handle the strains of sorting through all that information, the Steam infrastructure “more than doubled its service capacity and a new content delivery architecture was deployed to improve user download rates.”

Absolutely not surprised, I love Steam, granted I've not bought nothing from them for ages but I can see why they're top dog. I couldn't live without the overlay/friends etc these days, makes stuff so easy. Other clients such as Origin just don't compete whatsoever.

thats good news for steam and good news for us....more sale's :)

it's going to take a miracle for another digital company to knock steam from it's no 1 spot.

ill be using them for as long as i game, coming up to 44 soon so shan't be long before i chuck the towel in :(.......only joking !

Damn thats a lot of data transferred...

If they have grown by such a big amount then its a surprise they even managed to stay online during the sales, never mind sort out the change-over downtime after the first few days.

Good job Steam! Well deserved, only thing I would like is if their prices were more comparable to others stores and supermarket prices but I guess you pay that little extra for the ease of downloading a new game while sitting at your PC.

Impressive, however I can see their days being numbered. Or more likely a buy out from microsft or someone, especially with all that infrastructure.

Everything is having their own store, so there's no need for steam and physical media is dying.

Android has android market
iOS app market
Windows8 windows market.
Xbox and ps3 all ready have market places.

Give it ~3-5 years and I can't see a separate market.

Wow I knew they were doing good but not that good. Fantastic to hear, Steam and it's users have a bright future in gaming that's for sure :)

Also, 780 Petabytes of data....

Good points although I have so many games on Steam I wouldn't be willing to move.

As I see it, they may be bought out by another company although I'll still be using Steam under that company.

can believe this.

i have not really ever been into PC games only console. however this year i got hooked with the steam sale achievements and i am now looking for a graphics card to play games.

I do love Steam, and this is no surprise.

However, the lack of any real competition does mean that they continue to run with prices that are often higher than buying the game retail. It would be nice to see at least one other player start to push the prices down a bit (I think Green Man Gaming are doing the best job at the moment).

However, when compared to the price of Console games, I don't think PC gamers can really complain that much....

Which is in fact why steam is so popular is because many people don't want what you just listed on the PC platform at least, we have windows marketplace already and it doesn't matter if it comes with windows 8.

What are you talking about, market places are new and don't really exist on windows at the moment. It's got nothing to do with people not wanting that. There just isn't a steam alternative at the moment. Computers and especially the OS are going through a massive change where they are simpler and far more integrated.

Well then your out of context because steam is not new and whatever you want to call it, it will not be replaced by what your talking about.

I never said steam was new and yes it very much could be replaced by the newer "app" stores.

O you know how windows8 works and presumably the next mac system. Although mac is already much further along in the integration process.

It wont, because the integration of all the feature's that steam has will not work across all the apps stores.
Again what are you talking about, are you getting confused.

For example on apple you have game centre which has your username and friends, stats etc. Xbox also has all the stats friends lists and everything else.

Yes and they are all separate to each other, they are not integrated.

Just like i have games on steam, Origin, GFWL, they are all separate to each other which is a pain.

Separate accounts, frends lists, stats, installs, then the issues of separate backups.

yes, which is why app stores are likely to take over. It's all in one place and hence the demise or die to infrastructure buy out of steam and an incoporation into one of these app stores.

Everything is coming under one system. That way the developers in this case microsft can make certain demands. On stability, security and compatibility before it is listed in the app store.
Like all games and software on apple products are from the app store. All in one place, everything.

So I still don't know what you point or objection is.
